All this made me think of was when the original 2000s Fullmetal alchemist dvds were released - the store were giving away tins with every FMA dvd purchase to keep some of the dvds in (honestly they were kind of useless since there were like 12 dvds and the tins could hold up to 3 dvds. I still got two homunculi tins to keep my pin badges in tho).

oh god remember that invader Zim house box set that was some kind of hot topic exclusive? And you got one DVD with it as opposed to the full series. I was lucky and got the first edition (I think) with a little GIR figurine in the roof.

I remember spending nearly eighty bucks on three DVDs for an anime that was sub only and didn’t have any special features or extras. I spent like half a year’s allowance on it. Last December, I bought the LE version of My Love Story that came in a pretty box, was a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, and had a ton of extras for fifty bucks. It kinda blows my mind a bit.

Slayers was one of the very first anime I ever got into, right in the early 2000s. I spent probably over $100 on season one, subtitled VHS. There was only one store I could find that carried it, a Suncoast in the nearby mall. I had to buy the last several volumes in a set because I couldn't find the individual tapes. A year or so later I got Slayers Next on DVD for my birthday, a big chunky box of discs that was around $80. About ten years ago I finally re-bought the first and third seasons on disc for only $20 each and couldn't help but think of all that wasted money from way back when and how at the time it didn't even occur to me that the price was ridiculous.

It also makes me feel a little sad for all those series that were still being released in singles when the writing was on the wall and got cancelled unfinished. I have the handful of Hikaru no Go DVDs that were released and I can't help but think it might have had a chance if Viz had done season sets instead of trying to release 75 episodes in batches of 2-3 episodes a piece for over $20 each.

Yeah I've spent quite a bit of money hunting down boxed sets of anime I wanted. I don't have any regrets though, I loved them and watched the heck out of them all.

Companies back then did not have the budget or the fanbase to support larger prices like today. Your money was not wasted. It supported the companies and their workers so that they still exist today.

I mean, I guess those sets were incentives with extras? Sure they were kinda pricey, but localization wasn't cheap. It's nice that they have streaming services now and make different titles more accessible. Although a lot of old gems get lost in the mix now that there are so many to choose from.

I remember a lot of those sets were pretty barebones. Just the sub and dub and maybe clean openings and endings. I was really delighted when I got an anime DVD that had a whole bunch of extras like character profiles, music videos, and commentaries.

I'm super confused. Did people buy what they thought we sets but were actually individual DVDs of a season?

I don’t think people bought the boxes thinking they had all the DVDs since it was usually pretty clearly stated that the box would only come with the first one and you'd have to buy the rest. It’s just that back then, it was harder to find affordable anime. Anime DVDs used to contain about two to three episodes per disc and would retail for anywhere from twenty to thirty dollars. Companies would sometimes sell the first DVD in a box with space for you to fill with the rest of the DVDs. To complete a show, even if it was a short one with about twelve episodes, you would have to spend a ton of money. I remember trying to buy the YuYu Hakusho DVDs and settling on only buying my favorite episodes because they were so expensive. Now you can own the whole show for a fraction of what it would have cost you to fill those boxes.

Baby's first manga!!!!

Lol sorry, but that just brought back a flood of memories...I don't even remember if I read the whole thing...a couple of us passed the books around class. I don't think anyone outright bought the whole series tho...

I feel you on box sets. I also tire of how expensive they are.
