Boy, I agree with the sentiment, but I would not have picked any of those three shows. I can get where you're coming from with Lost, at least, although I think it's a good show. I have not watched Walking Dead because it seems dreadfully boring but I never really thought it was supposed to be smart. And Peaky Blinders... trying to be smart? Really? For me the whole appeal of it is that it's a stupid dumb goofy gangster crime show. Just because it's a British period piece doesn't mean it's trying to be smart.

Personally, I would have just put a picture of Stephen Moffat's face instead.

If you think Walking Dead is a dumb show that pretends to be smart check out the Your Movie Sucks guy on youtube's take on it. It's hilarious!

"Dumb tv pretending to be smart" just seems like such an incredibly subjective assessment that I can't agree with the secret. I agree that there are shows which I personally feel are not as smart as the creators seem to think they are. But that's complete personal opinion on my part, and I'm aware that others will perceive the quality of the show, and the authorial intent behind the show, differently than I do.

I would personally agree with Lost as an example. I don't think it was as smart as the writers seemed to think it was. (Though for my money, Sherlock would have been my number one example of a show that, IMO, wasn't as smart as the creators seemed to think it was.)

I've only seen S1 of TWD, but I would personally disagree on that one. I thought S1 of TWD was genuinely well-written and impactful, and I don't perceive it as a show where the creators thought they were telling a qualitatively different story than they actually were telling.

Season 1 of TWD was fine. Later seasons turned to shit real fast.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I can definitely see that happening. IMO, S1 set it up as the kind of show that really couldn't afford to lose its edge. I think that's one of the reasons I didn't come back for S2. I thought S1 was really strong, but I was wary of where they were going to go with it.

Finally someone who agrees with me! I really liked S1, gave up part way through S2 because it was so dull, picked it up again at 3 (?) because people were hyping it and then dropped it again. Not worth the effort for me.

I dropped Westworld because it seems to think "big budget + faux zen koans" = "prestige."

(Anonymous) 2020-06-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
What's a faux zen koan?

the sound of one hand punching?

Lol, A+

Pfft haha

(Anonymous) 2020-06-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
anon considered what a faux zen koan would be, and became enlightened

Big fat amen to this, S2 showed both that the writers are capable of good stuff if they just stick to a simple story (Kiksuya), but man, their pathological commitment to making every plot point a ~reveal~ undermined most of the dramatic potential in the back half of the season.

Disagree with Peaky Blinders. It's impeccably researched and has a really complex approach to class politics of the era and the dialogue is gorgeously written. Sure, it's couched in some plotting goofiness but I wouldn't call it dumb.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-03 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Any show that runs long enough will run into plot goofiness especially if it was originally written for actual television and not streaming. It's actually surprising we get so many coherent stories out of television at all to me because it seems the writers are all just running trying to keep up with new developments in scheduling, budget, new writers joining/old ones quitting or moving on to different projects, etc. There's always wrenches being thrown at them and any show that comes out of that with a tightly written plot is a fucking miracle.

Same, anon.

While I love SPN and Merlin, and I will agree they are silly shows that sometimes touch my heartstrings...I wouldn't necessarily put Peaky Blinders in that one. For me, Peaky Blinders falls right into the same territory as Hell on Wheels, or Mad Men -- historically based shows with drama.

I've seen PB & HoW, and they were both filled with drama. There was nothing cheesy, or wannabe smart about them. Something that would fall under that for me would be BBC Sherlock. Orphan Black was great, but even that one could walk the line -- the kind of show that tries to get to smart for its own good and becomes ridiculous (someone mentioned Westworld).

The delineating factor here is (at least for me) tends to be a show that uses "intelligence" (which could be argued for Tommy) as the overarching theme and setting the tone, mood and setting. It can be watered down into a sci-fi/possibly supernatural realm versus things I would consider period pieces. I know I didn't explain that well, but I hope you can catch my gist.

Yessss. One recent show that suffers from this problem: The Great. It clearly thinks it's The Favourite by way of Iannucci, but it's neither that clever nor absurd. It continually feels like it's mugging at the camera, waiting for me to laugh.

Agreed with the sentiment not sure if I agree with TWD being used. I don’t think TWD ever tried to be smart. It’s based on an overwrought and over dramatic comic where DONT U SEE. WE ARE THE MONSTERS is hammered in every story arc. That shit was never trying to be smart, especially when it devolved into “people arguing. Sometimes zombies show up” the soap opera.

However, the first season was good and that’s because it was by the guy who did The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist no surprises there.

To the OP - Agreed!!

I absolutely agree with Peaky Blinders; it started off with nuance but it's become pure self-indulgence violence glorifying nonsense. I live not far from Birmingham and the amount of unironic PB worship you see around here is ridiculous. They're not cool. Don't emulate them, please.
