I watched it with a nostalgic friend last year. It was my first time seeing it, and I actually liked it pretty well. I'd seen about 15 years of complaining about how bad it was and how Miaka was the worst main character ever, but when I watched it for my friend I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it actually works better without nostalgia goggles?

Yeah, I found Miaka to be a pretty realistic and relatable 15-year-old. She's a teenager and she acts like it, and the best part is that you get to see her mature over the course of the series. I liked her just fine as a main character because she DOES grow and mature and learn.

Fushigi Yugi has a special place in my heart because I met one of my best friends while reading the manga during lunch and she started talking to me because she liked it to. It's also the first anime I wrote fic for. However, it just doesn't hold up for me. I reread it not too long ago and a lot of things that didn't bother me back then bothered me now. Plus, Nuriko was the best and I hated what happened to them.

I actually rage quitted Fushigi Yugi over what happened to Nuriko, and the following erasure of their gender identity. To this day I haven't finished either the manga or the anime just because I rage over what happened to them.
And yet, they're still my favorite manga character pre-character assasination because Nuriko was amazing.

Back in the day, I disliked it so much I couldn't finish the first manga however everyone else I knew at the time loved it. A friend of mine reread it a couple of years ago and wished they hadn't.

Love that theme song, though.

It's still one of my favourite anime songs to this day!

I loved all the FY characters....except Miaka. She was just another Kagome to me (and I REALLY hate her). Theme song was the best part, imho.

So you're a Kikyo stan?

Ehhh....sorta? I thought she was a bitch, but I liked her more than Kagome.

Even back in the day...

I've always hated this show. Well, except maybe for when we watched the first couple episodes. Everyone was stupid, not just Miaka.

It got to one point where they had one of the bad guys, and they let him go... They're trying to do something world shattering, and you just let him go?!?! Their group needs every member to make the ritual work, just like yours. Why not kill him? Then, even if they defeat you, they still can't actually win.

I mean, it was 20 years ago. Your tastes and perceptions of the world are going to change. I don't know what kind of expectations people have going in to watch a new anime, but it's anime. Come on!

I loved the original series when I saw it years ago, but not the OVAs.

I actually just rewatched the whole series about two weeks ago bc quarantine and I still have a fervent nostalgic love for it. I loved it when I was 15, went through a hard analytical hatred of it in my early twenties, and swung back around to loving it in my late twenties. I'm 35 now and I had as much fun on rewatch as I did the first time. The music and the memorable characters will always outweigh the slapstick gags and stupid plot twists (which, being a melodrama, are essential to the series. Everything Happens SO MUCH! Because Miaka is 15 and it's aimed at 15yo girls for whom Everything is ALWAYS Happening So Much.)

tl;dr I love those dumbass Suzaku Seishi w all my weeby heart
