It was one bad episode out of an entire series of pretty damn good shit and the episode wasn't even that bad compared to other stuff on television; it was just bad compared to what Supernatural used to produce. Calm down, guys, sometimes a series takes a misstep. This was a misstep; they still have a chance to bring it back on track.

Until the show spirals down the way Heroes did, I wouldn't give up on it. I think it's pretty silly to write off the series based on a single episode.

(And I know OP isn't writing off the show per se, but I'm talking about the people in fandom raising absolute hell over the last couple of episodes like Kripke killed off Castiel and replaced him with Bela.)

There are dissenting viewpoints and then there's freaking the fuck out.

I don't care of you didn't like or did like the episode. I thought it was pretty bad myself. But some people are overreacting and moaning about how Kripke is ruining his own show forever and that these last two episodes is obviously an indication that everything he's written over the past three years is OMG! Invalidated! And Dean's sacrifice is ruined and Sam's character is ruined forever. And then you have fangirls incapable of separating an actor from his character so they go and attack Jared, too, for...Sam sleeping with Ruby? WTF.

I guess it just boggles me how far ahead people are leaping to conclusions based on one or two episodes and how far they're taking it. Maybe I've been reading too much TWoP and IMDb, I don't know. I realize people are a little bit saner on LJ.

I'm not really even responding to this secret because that scene was a little One Tree Hill/Charmed in a bad way, haha, I can see the OP's point. The secret just sort of pushed me on a tangent to other fandom reactions I've seen all over the place. It's been bothering me how insane the shitstorm is.

Kripke needs no-men and editors. And Jared got in trouble b/c he seemed to agree that it was okay to fuck a demon. w/e, the show needs help, but I'm not losing my mind like twop people are. But on lj, any dissenting view from "omg squee" is considered unacceptable.

it was rather evident from postings elsewhere from lj that several fans were not happy with Jared's comments - or lack of them. i think its fair to say that fans can be unhappy with his comments that fucking a demon is acceptable for a hunter, yes?

ABSOLUTELY! I was pissed off, myself, and had a lot of shit to say about it...but...I'm just snorting over the phrase "got in trouble".

regarding why people stay away: i think it might have to do more with the stalking, the horrific manips, the rampant judgment of other fans for opposing viewpoints,* etc, then this conversation.

capslock_spn which as far from Srs Bizniz as possible, people were making fun of the episode left and right without getting into trouble. I assure you, intelligent discussion and criticism of the show is perfectly acceptable on LJ. So is poking fun at the obvious issues it has. It's the sheer freaking out that's just disturbing and insane.

Its all a matter of interpretation. A dissenting viewpoint (which I have, and you apparently aren't going to let me have - which was my point in the first place) is that since Ruby's body can't give consent, its still rape. Whether the body's soul is there or not is irrelevant to people like me that feel that it is a desecration of the human body to have a demon ride around in it, and for Sam to fuck that body. Not everyone's going to agree with you that its not rape, and yelling at them won't change their minds.

I still think he should have phrased his words differently, but w/e, you have your thoughts and I have mine. And that's okay. Just stop demanding that I agree with you.

I don't care if you disagree. I'm not calling you, specifically, insane because you're not overreacting. But there are people who are. There's a difference between having a problem with what Jared says and going all out and dogpiling him to issue an apology. Shouldn't there be a line drawn as to how far someone takes something?

Unless you're going to call that a dissenting view, too, in which case we've moved past dissenting views on the fandom issues itself and onto the issues regarding how fandom should handle things they don't agree with. Which is a different matter entirely and not what I began talking about.

the difference between overreacting and disagreeing is a subjective line. and is typically influenced by the efficacy one feels towards/about a particular situation.

i think the "omg, squee, Sam was so hot fucking a demon" is WAY overreacting because the whole thing turned my stomach to the nth degree. but i also have the wherewithal to recognize that is my interpretation, and to the person saying it - and to others that agree with it - its not overreacting at all.

so rather than call people "batshit insane" for their words, it might be better to either walk away from them or consider that their emotional involvement does not equal yours in a given situation.

I hear you. IMDB is predictably a bubbling cauldron of stupid, but TWoP has ninja idiocy; you think you can engage in intelligent discussion, and the posters can even spell and everything, but then they come out with the most inane crap. And there are a lot of them! Brr.

My main issue with TWoP isn't even that they're a little, um. Passionate. Because whatever, it's their corner and their sandbox. I have to say, there are a few people who make some pretty good points. Rare, but there. My problem is that although they're technically only a small portion of fandom, the people on Supernatural like Kripke seem to be paying attention to them and taking them as representative of fandom as a whole. (Like, Jim Beaver blogging about Bobby's role because he read that people had a problem with Bobby? It was only actually a couple of people on TWoP, but that's kind of what I mean. It was just a few people and it sucks that actors and whatnot are kinda...taking this crap to heart.)

I don't even think creators should be catering to the fans in the first place at all, but if they are, TWoP isn't the best place to go if you want a full view of what fandom really thinks overall.

Although I guess this isn't TWoP's fault insomuch as it is the writers and whatnot for paying attention, but. Maybe it's not anyone's fault. I don't know what I'm saying anymore, so I'm going to stop now.

I enjoy some forums on TWoP, but the SPN forums have been boggling my mind a bit. Won't go into detail, but it's weird. Posting dissenting opinions feels like attempting to share meat with a rabid dog.

I completely agree with your point about TWoP's visibility to the writers. I should hope that by this point, Kripke and Co. have learned not to take too much advice from fandom, and furthermore, that they're confident enough in their own material not to ruin it for the sake of the batshit fans, but still. There's a difference between constructive criticism of plot, continuity, characterization, etc., and just disliking something because it's not to your taste (and I think one of the problems fandom often has is being unable to accept that they disapprove not for the first reason, but the second), and again, I really hope the writers can tell the difference.

oh and i agree too. that episode was bad but it wasn't a jump the shark moment. and the show is still much better than almost every other running series.
