You know why they exist? So that those who read them can look at the characters and say "Oh, I like what they did there, I could do something like that." or "Hey, that was stupid, I'll never do something like that."

These kinds of roles are here to help you learn, shape your personalities, and maybe grow a little. They have the same effect on us as our real life interactions have.

Uhm, no, lol, that's not why they exist– not in Twilight, anyway. NO one thinks that about Bella. They all want to be her and want their own sparkly Edward to come along and stalk them. I've not come across a single person who likes Twilight because they critically thought about the situation and decided Bella was a terrible role model and Edward a terrible example of a lover.

As for this "some pig headed stubborn feminist" shit. There really... isn't any middle ground between needing a man and not needing a man. Either you reject stereotypical female roles, or you don't. Either you're terrified of not being cute & feminine enough for a patriarchal man to like you, or you're not. What exactly would the in-between be? "I'll let cute guys treat me like an inferior sex, but not ones I don't want to sleep with"?

Also, by "stereotypical female roles," I mean women who, like Bella, have no passion, autonomy, or real story of their own, and are just sitting around waiting for Edward to save them. This is what the poster meant and most feminists mean when they talk about bad female roles; not roles where they're girly/feminine, which there's nothing wrong with.

How about wanting a man?

Huge difference between needing and wanting.
