Why is always one way or another? Why do you have to be either a weak little girl or some pig headed stubborn feminist? Why isn't there a middle ground?

Yes, there are always going to be the weak "OMG I can't live without him!" female roles in any sort of entertainment. And there are always going to be the stubborn, independent "OMG HOW DARE A MAN HELP ME!!!" female roles.

You know why they exist? So that those who read them can look at the characters and say "Oh, I like what they did there, I could do something like that." or "Hey, that was stupid, I'll never do something like that."

These kinds of roles are here to help you learn, shape your personalities, and maybe grow a little. They have the same effect on us as our real life interactions have.

So, whining, bitching and groaning about the weak willed characters without looking at the flaws of the strong willed characters is a bit hypocritical, don't you think? Doesn't matter how they act, their actions always end up hurting someone no matter whether they are strong or weak.

Besides, just because you're a opinionated, passionate, stubborn, blunt, intelligent and confident young woman doesn't mean you'll be unhappy all you life. If you truly think that, you not really any of those things then. Because if you were, you wouln't have to complain to the anonymous masses of the internet. And you make the rest of us look bad.

I agree. I minored in Women's Studies and there are a lot of women with arguments that are counterproductive that frankly, I just wanted to punch in the face.

Isn't there a difference between "feminist" and "pig-headed, stubborn feminist?" IMHO, the qualifiers here are important. I could criticize someone for being a "small-minded, ignorant evangelical Christian" without it meaning that I was criticizing all evangelicals. There ARE some feminists who happen to have appalling characters, after all.

I think the OP was simply trying to point out that there is a middle road: people who are nice AND strong-willed, girly AND independent, romantic AND feminist. Might not have been the most felicitous way of making that point, but I think it's still a valid one.

Re: 101

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
APPLAUSE.

(honest to god, if you can call someone out for portraying a weak little girl, you can call someone out for portraying a pig headed stubborn feminist =/)

The vast majority of fictional characters are not there to help shape anyone's personality. They're not there to be role models or bad examples. They're just there to tell a story.

Uhm, no, lol, that's not why they exist– not in Twilight, anyway. NO one thinks that about Bella. They all want to be her and want their own sparkly Edward to come along and stalk them. I've not come across a single person who likes Twilight because they critically thought about the situation and decided Bella was a terrible role model and Edward a terrible example of a lover.

As for this "some pig headed stubborn feminist" shit. There really... isn't any middle ground between needing a man and not needing a man. Either you reject stereotypical female roles, or you don't. Either you're terrified of not being cute & feminine enough for a patriarchal man to like you, or you're not. What exactly would the in-between be? "I'll let cute guys treat me like an inferior sex, but not ones I don't want to sleep with"?

Re: 101

[identity profile] honeysuckle-raw.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, by "stereotypical female roles," I mean women who, like Bella, have no passion, autonomy, or real story of their own, and are just sitting around waiting for Edward to save them. This is what the poster meant and most feminists mean when they talk about bad female roles; not roles where they're girly/feminine, which there's nothing wrong with.

How about wanting a man?

Huge difference between needing and wanting.

I think it is less about women being kickass and more that women characters have agency and their own identity. It isn't about strength and weakness it is about them being portrayed as human and as equals. I.E. female characters not being given any interest or passions outside of getting a man, or throwing out those interests and passions for the sake of a man.

We just need more female characters with actual agency, and less that come across as damsels who are passed around with no real personality or will of their own.

Re: 101

[identity profile] honeysuckle-raw.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. See amended comment after my original. :)

I should have used a better phrase than "cute & feminine." What I meant by that was women who are afraid that if they're too loud, too independent, or too "feminist" (GOD FORBID), men won't like them.

Also, if it weren't for those pig headed stubborn feminists, you wouldn't be able to do things like vote and get an education and earn an equal wage and make your own choices in life. You want to bitch about them, give up your equal rights first.

Re: 101

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
there are always going to be the stubborn, independent "OMG HOW DARE A MAN HELP ME!!!" female roles.

It's interesting that you should say this, because I think it's very, very rare, if they exist at all. Usually, female characters who are shown to be independent will have their independence treated as a flaw.

There are usually two ways things play out; either she's been forced to become who she is due to some outer occurrence (have you ever seen a female character seek adventure, skill, or glory for their own sake while still being portrayed as a hero?), and secretly unhappy about it, or she's shown that her independence is somehow wrong, and that the traditional female gender role is what will make every woman happy in the end.

Yeah, Lina Inverse, from Slayers.

Though she does accept help from men when she needs it, so my answer applies only to the quote. The rest I heartily agree with.

also you ^^ people, she didn't mean "all feminists are pig-headed", she meant there are some women out there who conform to that stereotype. which there definately are. and they ARE a pain in the ass.
