I thought that was to show that Aziraphale has always been a friendly, giving person.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This!!! It's just another touch of his compassion. You see it in the big things, like giving Adam the sword, and in little things, like...just reflexively doing this. If Aziraphale weren't the kind of person to do this without being in love with Crowley yet, then what the heck was Crowley falling in love with him for? He'd just be another heavenly asshole.

I thought it was to show that from the start he thought angels and demons were job titles rather than the embodiment of all that is good and all that is evil. He's a little wary cause they're still strangers, but he's not really otherwise judging this stranger based on their job title, and that's also when Crowley decided that here's a potential future friend.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I thought it was a reflexive move on his part, not necessarily a conscious decision to protect Crowley specifically.

Yup, was going to say the exact same thing. Like I can see where OP is coming from, but I just can't imagine him not doing that since I find it just so integral to his character, y'know.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's Aziraphale. He's _nice_. This scene is not about his and Crowley's relationship, it's about Aziraphale as a character.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Which he actually isn't.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's like, your opinion, man

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
You lost everyone at 'actually', fedora guy.
litalex: Jefferson from John Adams, lounging around (LOL!Jefferson)

Thank you! That's establishing Aziraphale's character immediately.

I am completely incapable of being objective about this moment, because I have both a wing kink and a casual courtesy kink a mile wide, and this one little gesture just set off a lovely ping in my brain the first time I saw it in the trailer. Not even the vague peeve of Crowley's wings being black when in the book they're very pointedly the same colour as Aziraphale's could punch through it.

Though, I think Aziraphale is just generally the sort to be reflexively courteous. It wouldn't be a stretch for him to absently shield probably even his worst enemies, let alone someone he's having a semi-friendly philosophical conversation with.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it because I thought it was cute. Plus, I agree with all the anons above me. Aziraphale's just nice like that.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I love how specific this is! I enjoyed it, but I didn't read the book so there's that.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a nice moment, and as others said, it shows that Aziraphale is unfailingly decent. But if I'm going to be "realistic" and not overly fluffy, I'm willing to bet the conversation turned awkward/bickery before too long and Crawly/Crowley slithered off with a snarky remark.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
You can argue it's part of the START of the development of the relationship, part of their meet cute. Their's was not really an ennemies-to-friends sort of relationship in the sense that they started out disliking each other or being nasty to each other. Rather, they were just on different sides but had no personal quarrel with each other and that is what allowed them to keep meeting up amicably and eventually become friends.

Is in the book, was lovely then and is lovely now

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
A nice, friendly angel is nice and friendly to someone in need of shelter, no matter who that someone is? YOU DON'T SAY.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I just loved how chummy they were straight away, it said so much about how well they fit together despite being on opposite sides. The sheltering wing was just one part of that to me.
