I hate love triangles in general, but I really hate it when the heroine has to choose between the decent guy and the asshole. The heroine almost always fits better with the decent guy who treats her right, but for some reason, the author wants to pair her up with the asshole and will turn the decent guy into an even bigger asshole to make the other one look like the better choice in comparison.

Do you have a fandom in mind for this secret, OP?

No particular fandom in mind. It’s just something I’ve noticed in manga and while watching certain dramas.

"Love triangles" for me only work if the story is a real slow burn set in the stage of "feelings are messy and confusing and I don't know who I should pursue a relationship with because I sort of like both of them and I think they may sort of both like me, maybe I just won't do anything at all" (this of course assuming poly is off the table).

Or something like someone "stuck" in a loveless marriage and someone else catches their eye witch complicates things (I'm not into cheating generally, especially if it's a character I'm supposed to like, it's just the pining aspect and then maybe they get out of the marriage and pursue an actual relationship after). I'm a particular fan of this angle though if it's a period setting since in most of them getting out of a marriage was off the table for many people for lots of reasons which explains why they don't just leave if they're unhappy.

In general I'm a sucker for the "for whatever reason A is stuck in a relationship of some kind of B but A doesn't have real feelings for B they actually like C who also likes them so they're stuck in this angst pining".

I like the love triangle as a potential to make things messy but the cheap "will they won't they who will they chose tune in next time to find out even though you already know who it's going to be!" stuff sucks. It's just too bad it's super easy to do the one instead of the other even if that isn't the intention.
