What's the worst attempt at grey morality you've seen?

For me the worst are where everyone is unlikable and there is no one to actually root for. I'm not saying everything needs full-on heroes. But if every single character is self-centered and entirely in it for themselves and the only difference between the main characters and the designated villains is that the main ones are the POV characters and maybe the villain got a "kick the dog" moment the author assumed would make the audience automatically root for the main characters, I'm really not interested in reading or watching any further. There clearly is an audience for that kind of stuff, but it isn't me.

This is why I feel a bit hostile towards HBO. I feel like they're the worst offenders when it comes to "everybody is awful" TV shows. Not every single HBO show is like that, obviously, but the majority definitely are and I just get so sick of it. I get pulled in by the high production values and general solidness of the show overall...and then after a while all the characters suck and it's like, not this again.

with those kinds of shows i always end up with the bad-guys as my faves, bc at least i'm not being told they're good people while they go around fucking shit up.

shows can have morally dubious people on the side of good sure, but i need at least one genuinely good person to root though otherwise i just get so frustrated.

does all the characters in Family Guy being assholes count or not?

The people who write Dragon Age keep trying to 'both sides' it and failing. Sorry, no-one's gonna barrack for the fucking 16th century Catholic church complete with Inquisition! It's not gonna happen!

I agree so hard. The templars vs. mages conflict was handled so badly.

It's probably not the worst I've seen, but it's the most memorable because I've played Tales of the Abyss so many times. (Old spoilers below.)

Finding out Anise chose to spy on the party and aid in murder (of her closest friend no less) because if she didn't, her already-poor parents would lose their source of income entirely, is treated as such a HARD decision poor thing because they're both terrible choices! When it should actually have been a no-brainer which choice was more evil, and she chose that one.

It's a shame too, because it would have been easy to make it more nuanced. It's not hard to believe it wasn't just her parents' money but also her parents' and her own lives that were being threatened, since Mohs would certainly have the authority to do that to her. But with the way the game presents it, at best you can only headcanon that he was threatening her more severely.

I still love Anise, but that part did not have the best writing.

Might not be fair because I didn't finish the series due to its coming across to me as a bad attempt at grey morality, but I'll go with the Netflix series of The Punisher.
