Their whole deal is skeevy, however, I believe the terms actually originated with children and pet adoption places have taken to using them, not the other way around.

DA

As a non-native speaker it's never ceased to be wild to me that adoption is used as a term used for acquiring pets. In my native language adoption is strictly a human child thing.

Ah, so you live in one of those countries where pets are just toys you buy and then leave on the side of the road for someone to pick up when you get bored with them. That's a problem that runs deeper than language, my friend.

Calling it adoption doesn't seem to be stopping Americans from abandoning their pets at a much higher rate than my country, which has no stray dogs and very few stray cats. Try again sweaty.

I'm assuming you have wildlife that eats them, sweaty.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, one of those people that think pets are more worthy than humans.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but pets not being toys does not imply that humans are worthless. Do you treat your pets as toys?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Or they're from one of the countries where pets are supposed to be your friends, not your "children". It creeps me the fuck out when westerners refer to their own children as their pets' "siblings".

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so you're from one of those countries that don't have manimals.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're family and it's disgusting and disturbing when people DON'T treat them as such. A pet is a commitment and I hate how other countries treat them as disposable.

I can totally see how that would be strange. Don't listen to AYRT. They are clearly hung up on this to a level that makes them seem borderline unhinged.
