I've never really come across the stereotype IRL nor in media, just like... in social media posts. This honestly might be the closest thing when I think about it.

Oh man, I grew up in a small, Midwestern town; sooo many horse girls and their long pony tails.

I didn't know until now that people were still talking about it being a thing; I grew up as one in the 1980s and it was very very much A Thing in the 80s and 90s. I was one even before the Saddle Club books came out. it's been a seldom-discussed stereotype since the OG My Little Ponies, something you might not think about often but if someone says "horse girl" in mixed company at least half the people will say "oh yeah I totally had a friend/many friends/I was one" and say how growing up all girls were legally obligated to go through a horse phase. for some it lasted a few months, for others it was their entire teenage existence.

thankfully I not only grew out of that phase, I also grew out of being a girl, so...

I just got flashbacks to all the girls in my class trading Pony Pals books and talking about horses and wanting to own a horse. I think I was the only girl who didn’t dream of owning a horse because they scared me.

DA

I get that! I don't mind horses (though I never went through any kind of phase with them, the way other girls did), but yeah, I can also easily see where they'd be rather intimidating for some people. I'd probably be a bit nervous around one, too, 'cause they can spook so easy and whatnot.

In my case, I never dreamed of owning a horse simply because we never lived anywhere where we could have one and didn't have the money for that kind of thing anyway. That's probably also why I never developed a horse obsession in general. Maybe if our family had had the money and means to own a horse, my attitude about all of that might've been different.
