I've never touched an IPod because of all the problems my friends and family have had with it. Unfortunately, I've found the best alternative is the Sony Walkman... which maxes out my budget at 16 gb.

I've done okay with Ipods, although I much preferred the classic to the touch. I just have a lot of music and need different music for different things. I have work music, car music, fun music, relaxing music, exercise music, and other stuff. I'm maxed out on my current 30 gig one, so 16 gigs wouldn't work.

The first MP3 player I ever had was a Sony. It was only like...2G I think? (Which was small even at the time I got it.) But man, it was a great little unit. It was really small but it still had a screen and options of how to sort through your music. And it was still going strong after seven years, when I switched to just using my phone.

I know you're not looking for some tiny 2005 model MP3 player, but I can attest that I got excellent usage out of my Sony.

HOWEVER, I don't know if they still do it this way, but my Sony was an absolute bitch about software. It required software to upload music to it, and if you switched computers and then lost the disc the software came on you were fucked because it was impossible to find opensource anywhere. Obviously they're not going to be doing the disk thing anymore, but if you go with Sony I'd still look into whether their tech comes with major software limitations.
