Sorry, I'm out of the loop... how are people trying to commodify fanfiction now?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-16 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno how prevalent it is, but I have seen a few Tumblr posts about how an author will write you a fic tailored to your tastes for X amount of money. Maybe I'm just an old, but that's such a huge no-no for me.

nayrt

AH. Commissioned fics? Charging for it? I mean...I think back to my early days and I guess at the time, I was always too scared to request an author to make a fic according to my designs (and also, I guess I felt that was a very entitled request?). But wouldn't there just be comms or challenges to do this?

Now you've got me thinking if I would be willing to pay for such a thing...I usually just find fics I like, change the names, or write my own. Huh. But yeah, there's something about that...but it's similar to commissioning fanart...do people charge for fan art?

Do you feel the same way about fanart?

I'm verging on fandom old status and yeah, I agree. Like, if they want to have a "tip jar" I don't really care, as long as they don't post a link to it on AO3. But anything that's like, "Pay money, get fanfic," or even, "Pay money, get access to the fanfic that is behind a paywall," I'm like, oh yikes no.

oh god paywalls for fics sounds like something that would actually happen.

I see. I'm older too, and I remember that such a thing was deemed okay if it was like, for a non-profit fundraiser situation. Not if the author was trying to make money off their fanfiction. People were a lot more strict about that back in the day, I didn't realize attitudes had changed so much.
