The way that the other humans in SPN treat Sam? As an psychological addict sure. But what we saw on screen was that it's a physical dependency at best, and that, this is my interpretation from what we saw in the Famine episode, any little dribble gives Sam a enough power to get more. Which is to say, giving Sam any blood give Sam some leverage over the demon opposite him and would be dangerous to do. I think we see Sam a little desperate when he meets with Ruby after being detoxed, but when push comes to shove with Famine where his addiction has been uped to 11, after the first hit, he's basically fine and better than both Dean and Cas, so I don't think it actually is that type of constant thrall.

Hmmm. It has been a while since I have seen SPN. I'lll have to rewatch some episodes...I do remember him being powerful after, and always seeking Ruby out (and later, didn't he try to stop it?)...Hmmm. Was he able to keep his wits/self after the blood or was his thinking under the sway of the blood? I remember Dean used to get so mad and treat him like he was addicted (because there was an element of this). I will agree I could see it as a physical thing, and sure one hit was good, but he would still need another and so on. What if (in the fic) he grew addicted to that feeling? I could see that happening, despite his best intentions/moral compass...

I'm curious now to know if KoH Dean was stronger than Mark of Cain Dean (and did those times overlap?). Because I can't see even Demon Blood Sam overpowering MoC Dean. And I will agree with the anon below me that Dean is not an idiot, he would know he wpuld need some type of safe guard against Sam turning on him (I'm also the anon below who wants to write a non wincest fic aboit this now, so thanks OP, for inspiring a fic with this secret!). You have given me much to ponder. I also think I merge soulless Sam with the time Dean became Knight of Hell...time to rewatch/read episode summaries!

OP:

I think the biggest problem is that the SPN writers can't write addiction. But while he always sought out Ruby, he also only sought out Ruby even tho any demon would do, because his conviction that he shouldn't drink from possessed humans was that strong. I don't think you could say the addiction was ever stronger than his conviction, and that's what makes me think it was mostly a physical dependency. The only time his will to not drink from possessed humans was truly broken was when he went to go kill Lilith, and it was pretty clear that it was his determination to kill Lilith and not the blood drinking that motivated that. Otherwise you have Famine driving his blood lust up as high as possible, and after he drained two demons, he was on purpose even then. He killed a Horseman, who like Knights of Hell, can't be killed, and for similar reasons (for what I would say is better reasons. The Horseman, except for Death, are God-made which is going to be far stronger than the Lucifer-made Knights, and Sam killed one with the blood of only two demons).

Sam could destroy human/demon souls including Lilith who is actually comparable to MOC Dean as the Mark of Cain and Lilith were made by Lucifer at similar times. The problem with Knights of Hell is that you can't invulnerable to most things, but the soul is where you draw power.....which Sam can kill. Sam only needed the blood of 1 demon to kill Lilith.

That said, I think a fic writer would just need to make to do some magical work to make it make sense with what canon shows us. Some spell that is comparable to Famine's power and magical restraints. You could make some Man of Letters shit up or use that box of symbols which Dean was going to be put into to keep Michael contained. But I don't think Sam is actually comparable to angel or demon and that's the problem. Sam has Lucifer like powers but isn't affected by demon-trapping. I think you'd have to make up a demonus ex machina for "magical restraints and spell" to work, and that's not really engaging with the differences in power.

I'm glad this inspired you! ngl I think soulless!Sam makes this problem even worse. Sam is ruthless in canon but Soulless is BEYOND. He sucked his own blood out to make a demon trap, no way would Knight of Hell Dean be a match.

This was all super useful! I'm going to have to take certain things into consideration now -- I could definitely do away with some things with just a wave of the hand -- i.e. Author's Twist on Canon -- Sam is less powerful if I say he is -- but where's the fun in that? I might toy with Dean working up some ghastly contraption or binding substances humans are addicted to with the blood...hmmm. I'll play around with this.
