HEY... PERSON. :D

fandom_wank would ttly be a place to search? idk. it might have something.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-05 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you could reply with something productive, like an answer to the question.

Unfortunately, I've only ever seen wank involving slash pairings in which the other pairing was het.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good enough start, I guess. Can you tell me the fandom/ship war?

(Anonymous) 2008-12-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was in West Wing fandom, there was wank over Josh/Sam vs. Josh/Donna. That was years ago though. :P

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Does the same pairing just different positions count?

Because Gundam Wing had some huge Heero/Duo vs Duo/Heero and Trowa/Quatre vs Quatre/Trowa wars that got just as bad as the slash vs het was, and then there is Sasuke/Naruto vs Naruto/Sasuka in Naruto.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I need it to be a ship war rather than a uke/seme war. I'm looking for the likes of Hr/Ron v. Hr/H here.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a bit tougher. I don't really think there has been any slash vs slash ship war on the same grand scale as the het pair vs. het pair, when a slash pair is involved it is usually vs a het pair.

I mean I see fans dislike slash pairs and preferring another to it, but it is never really on the "I hate the other pair and death the fans of it" kind of thing.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is the canon factor. The major het pairing wars are over whether a ship is canon, since the majority of slash ships aren't really going to be explicitly canon, they don't need that validation and as such people shipping other slash pairings aren't really a "threat", whereas one of the characters getting with a woman would be, since that challenges the gay notion.

Sometimes I wish het pairings would take the same approach and not need that validation as much.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one factor. I can think of a lot of others... Involvement of a female character and fandom's tendency to judge them more harshly (varies also from western to eastern fandom and fandom to fandom), solidarity within slash fandoms, a different approach to shipping employed by slash fans than by het fans that comes from a different mindset from hanging out in different groups...

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the different approach is related to canon thing, since het shippers tend to tie their approach to canon in ways that doesn't happen with slash.

Also it is interesting but in my fandoms where the primary conflict was slash vs het there was very little in fighting in either sides, but that might be because the main the conflict prompted solidarity within each group.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why it isn't a combination.

When there's a ship war, there is usually very little conflict within each side. Both sides tend to be a circlejerk, with some fans who separate themselves to designate themselves as not having the crazy. There is a LOT of self-identification and solidarity in any ship war, or else they wouldn't become full-blown ship wars, I think. That's why I suggested solidarity as a cause for less slash ship wars. Slash fans tend to self-identify as slash fans and consider that an in-group, while het fans often don't, so even if you ship something different there's already something in common.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Which was probably caused by opposition to slash in fandom as a whole, which taps into a shared history that non-slash fandoms don't have in that sense. A het shipper may be attacked for a certain pairing they shipped but is not as likely to be attacked by fandom as a whole due to shipping het. At least it was like that awhile ago, I think fandom as a whole has changed in that regard, but the feelings and the history still keep them together.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good theory.

Sometimes I wish het pairings would take the same approach and not need that validation as much.

I dunno. I see a lot of the "validation" with slash pairings, too, but in the "this subtext is clearly there and if you don't see it, it's because you don't look/don't believe in subtext/aren't paying attention/are homophobic*/etc."

"Subtext" tends to be used as validation even more than "canon" in my experience. But then, everyone has different fandom experiences, so what one person has seen everywhere can be the exact opposite of what another has seen.

(But then, I generally think people in general need to get over shipping and declaring canon and subtext and better/worse ships, het or slash.)

*Thankfully, I don't see this one as much, but I have seen it.

Due South. Seriously, the animosity between the Fraser/Kowalski fans and the Fraser/Vecchio fans was scary.
