129. What about an OT3? Haha. I think that I also prefer K/H a bit more than T/H.

170. Ok, let's try this. Repeat after me:

Characters from printed series which are not satire and or/parody can not be "Mary-Sues".
"Mary-Sue" is a term which can only refer to a character found in fanfiction.

there are very few exceptions.

That's not true, though, because Mary-Sue is plenty applicable to roleplaying games where you use original characters.

[identity profile] voyakiloid.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's more like the exception.
And originally the term was used for such fanfic OCs.

Now it's enough to have some sort of superpower/strength and be female to be called a Mary-Sue.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that usage of the term has gotten quite out of hand, as has everyone's preoccupation with it.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] voyakiloid.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, Bella is...Twilight in general is an exception. But maybe for the standards of that universe, she is..normal or something?

Re: rp account

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
She's definitely normal by Twilight standards. It baffles me that people hate on Bella for Suedom when Edward is clearly a much more greivous offender.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in his case it can be explained by vampire glamour, I suppose.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2008-12-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
This is true, but if you compare Vamp!Bella to vamp!Edward, Bella outsues him by a lot, and that's saying something.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] megglez13.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
The difference though is that Bella is a blatant self-insert on the part of SMeyer.

I have to respectfully disagree. While I most certainly agree that "Mary Sue" is over-used, there are some women (and men, because Gary Stu gets on my damn nerves as well) that fit all of the Mary Sue stereotypes.

Barack Obama, for one. "First black president of the US" my ass. And of course he's beloved by everybody and came from a sketch background and ousts George Bush and now has a cabinet full of slashable cohorts.

Re: 170

Personally I'm more offended by Palin--what sort of horrible writer puts that many female stereotypes into a vice presidential candidate? I'm writing letters to the studio.

Re: 170

[identity profile] voyakiloid.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, of course. I mentioned, in really, really small text, that there are exceptions.

But if I may ask..Could you please name a few? Because I'm honestly curious and don't think that I have seen any in my fandoms.

Re: 170

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
The main character of the "Rhapsody" books by Elizabeth Hayden, Ayla from the "Clan of the Cave Bear" books, and Anita Blake from Laurell Hamilton's books (though only in the later parts of the series).

It's rare in original published fiction, but not unheard of.

Re: 170

[identity profile] voyakiloid.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
And looking those up...I have to agree, yeah.

But still, rare. And if anything, maybe they should just be called "too perfect" or something like that. And the term Mary-Sue shouldn't really be used for them :I

Re: 170

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think the main problem is that "Mary Sue" is too overused a label, and often used where it doesn't really fit.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
There are very few exceptions

Well that completely negates everything else. But for the record, Suedom doesn't mysteriously disappear as a writing problem simply because the writer is professional, and the phenomenon has nothing to do with satire or parody. It has to do with author favoritism and unearned attention,, a trap every writer is in danger of falling into.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's just that one shouldn't assume every published/professional writer does fall into it, repeatedly and inevitably, and then proceed from that assumption. Fandom at large seems to be following this formula a lot more than necessary.

Re: rp account

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but the argument is that Mei can't be a sue, and that just doesn't hold up. Statistics can't be used this way. It doesn't matter how often it happens, if it happens at all, then it's a valid option.

Personally, I don't think Mei is a sue, I think she has serious irritating design flaws, but they aren't due to the author favoritism. In fact, I think it's mostly a case of culture not translating. Now, Rodney McKay of Stargate Atlantis however is a good candidate for Studom and only manages to avoid being unbelievably irritating because his actor is extremely talented. Even so, the absolutely blatant author favoritism going on is starting to seriously annoy the fuck out of the fanbase, including the Rodney-lovers.

Eh, I guess I just saw the comment more as a stern reminder of "mostly" than as an attempt to assert absolute law. Like school or workplace rules that can occasionally be bent for a good enough reason, but sometimes have to be strictly enforced so that people don't end up thinking (for example) they're entitled to wear bathrobes and bunny slippers to the office. My bad for letting pet peeves cloud my interpretation of the logic. :p

I'm actually not familiar with the source material from the original secret, but I do agree with you about cultural differences just on general principle. There've been several times I've wondered what purpose a character or plot point served in media from Japan, and only understood it after research. (Can't remember any, now that I've done the research. Darn.)

To be honest, that's exactly how it was meant to be read. I'm probably just bad when it comes to getting the point across, or something.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-06 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, from discussions I've had with someone who understands the culture far better than I do, in Japan, a very small character is seen as being cute and adorable. In addition, Mei uses extremely polite and prissy language. So the result is this adorable, cute, polite and innocent princess character who is simultaneously kick-ass and powerful and independent -- which is supposed to come off as being funny, because these personality types should not mix.

But the problem is small doesn't = cute adorable teen in western eyes. Small = young child. Her polite language is entirely lost in translation. So instead we get a "princess", but not a very refined one, who looks like a 4 year old but lusts after men, and is a little fighting machine on par with the main characters. She isn't humorous, she's just disturbingly wrong.
