I had to look it up but yeah, he left after series 14 and I think the show is better off without him. Ed Byrne and Ed Gamble are on a lot now and IIRC they seem to be making an effort to include more women and POCs, too.

I do like Ed Byrne and Ed Gamble. It's also good that they're making more effort with inclusivity (though I can unfortunately imagine the pushback they're getting for that *sigh* when will people learn that being male doesn't automatically make you funny) - maybe I might give it another go at some point!

I also got quite bored of Russell Howard tbh. I like his stand up and his Good News show but toward the end of my watching it, on MTW he was funny like 50% of the time.

I remember when the issue first came up and there was talk of the BBC making it mandatory to include one woman per show or something like that and people were absolutely fucking ridiculous about it. Like oh noooeeeeeeeessss women aren't funneeeeeeeeee and it will ruin eeeeeeeeeeeverything!!!!

Guess what, it didn't. It actually helped. Turns out that expanding your guest base beyond the same dozen or so white guys makes your panel more interesting, go figure.

My favourite thing about that pushback is when they say shit like "oh but women and black comedians talk about periods and racism all the time like that's funny! Bodily functions are gross! And I don't want politics!"

Like white male comedians aren't talking about their cocks and farts all the time and how they worried about voting for some politician because of their stance on something really minor and stupid.

Exactly. It's infuriating that whatever white male comedians talk about is normal and anything outside of that experience is somehow wrong or not valid as comedy material? What bullshit.

I actually don't get the "period" complaint because in my experience, in terms of living as a human... female comedians mostly talk about feeling horny, mundane aspects of daily life and being a parent and/or having ageing relatives, which (spoiler alert) the men do too?

As for comedians in any other marginalised group, I love it when they talk about their experiences and especially when they turn it back on their audience. Good. More people should be made to feel uncomfortable for not thinking about this stuff. But it's also hilarious and teaches you something.

I think it comes from a place where a lot of men are ignorant and squeamish about "women stuff" in a way that's completely irrational. Your balls aren't going to shrivel up and drop up just because you know how a uterus works, you massive piss-baby. You live in a world where roughly half the population are women, you have female relatives, partners and maybe even children. Only white guys can turn an embarrassing lack of knowledge about half the world's population into a sacred monument to their own fragile masculinity.
