Hmm, the only fandom I've been in long enough to notice a change is the American Girl one. It used to be really taboo to not talk about anything that wasn't "nice". It wasn't just that you couldn't comment on a post to tell the person that they needed to brush their doll's hair or things of that nature. You couldn't tell anybody that their racist post was hurtful because then you'd both get mod warnings about "discussing politics". That attitude seems to have really changed in recent years with more people challenging those who post racist content and, so far, nobody's been immediately silenced with "here's a warning for discussing politics" or had their posts deleted. Of course, some people are mad about "bringing politics into our nice doll fandom", but there's been a noticeable shift in what people want to discuss, especially now that AG's made a public commitment to diversity.

Super interesting! I always find it telling (or at least curious) when people conflate race with politics. I have always been curious about doll fandom -- and I am going to guess these posts were more often made with the "historical" AG dolls.

As far as the dolls go, I have an AG doll (the customizable kind) and I remember choosing out of the catalogue and wishing therr could be a bit more diversity in the options -- which I am sure exists now. I was afraid to curl my doll's hair and ruin her.

Oh yeah, those types of posts tended to come up when talking about the historical dolls. A few years ago, it was about the Girl of the Year because it was pretty glaring that AG hadn't made one that was black. There's also been some talk about how there hasn't been an Asian historical (aside from Ivy, who wasn't a full character because she was Julie's best friend and had two outfits to her name). AG's gonna be releasing an '80s doll this year and a number of people are really hoping she's Asian. Recently, the talk's been about AG's post on committing to diversity and a lot of people are excited that we might get more dolls of color, but a few are grouchy because apparently making diverse dolls means . . . AG's telling them that they can only buy dolls of color instead of white dolls? IDK People are weird. At the same time, people are calling out AG for not giving their dolls of color that same amount of showcasing that their white dolls get. It's pretty interesting.

Ooh, if you still want to curl your doll's hair (assuming you still have her) it's actually really easy! There are a number of YouTube tutorials on curling their hair. I've done it before and it's a little scary at first 'cause it involves hot water, but the results are pretty nice.

Huh. Yeah, that would be awesome to have an Asian AG doll (and explore the variety of what that could mean, as many countries and ethnic groups compromise Asia). If people were getting upset over the prospect of a AG doll of tge year being Black...I mean...I hope they open their eyes...

Gotta check that out! I only ever tried the twist cord & hot water for Barbies, but I was always too impatient. I still have my AG doll, so let's see! I will be patient this time!

Wow, imagine thinking that by producing one single Asian doll, it means white dolls are canceled forever. Like what in the ever loving fuck.
