I've been really wanting to learn to sew properly and I'm considering finally buckling down and getting a sewing machine. Does anyone have any sites or youtube videos that are good for helping beginners? I've tried doing a general search but there's a lot and it's hard to tell what's genuinely helpful.

Everyone has such different learning styles it's hard to say. I think books are actually more helpful for the very basics because you can take your time with the instructions and diagrams are often clearer than video. A book is also likely to list several different methods for each thing (hemming, buttonholes, etc) as well as tell you when they're most useful. That kind of information isn't necessarily what you'll find in a video.

Then you can use videos to supplement that knowledge.
