Sex and drugs and drinking were included in a way that seemed sort of realistic and not glamorized (there are the in-canon ways teens think of those things and people who do them are cool, but the pitfalls some teens learn about that make them not so cool are there, too). It captured the weird intensity and awkwardness that is being a teenager better than anything else I've ever seen.
