I don't think it has anything to do with attention spans, I think it has to do with the fact that the game was released in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic where people were desperate for things to do.

Yeah, this. People were complaining about how long the Bunny Day event was but like. It was that way because normally people would be going to work and school, so people could pick it up whenever they had the chance. 15 minutes of play time on break time would have been fine with me but I lost my job and was playing 8 hours a day. /shrug

My work is essential and never closed for quarantine, just adjusted hours and had us working rotating two week shifts. The first couple weeks when I was off I played a lot of AC and could see where people got bored...then I went back to work and was thankful for the pace because I could only play an hour or so a day. I've only just started seriously terraforming my island. I think you're right that a lot of people suddenly had all day to play a game intended to be played in shorter chunks.

I also think the sudden explosion of popularity can be blamed for this a bit too, that early on especially you had people posting their amazingly terraformed island setups and FOMO set in for a lot of people who felt they immediately needed to finish *their* dream island full of dream villagers and post pictures or else no one would care in two weeks.

Oh totally. It was unavoidable on social media for a while. It's awesome that you've just started the terraforming - I hope you have a good time with it. I've torn down my island and rebuilt it a couple of times, but that's how I have fun so I don't mind. :D And I have a friend who just got her Switch and the game, her excitement is so fun to watch.
