Oh I hear ya. Our PE teachers didn't give a crap about us either. Anyone who was not immediately good at sport or exercise was just left to do their own thing and heavily criticised at the same time.

SAN Congratulations btw, that's bloody brilliant. How did you crack it in the end?

Thank you :) As I said below, Couch to 5K. I completed that about 18 months ago but then got injured so my approach after that was to go out and see how far I could run. I got stuck around the 2 mile mark for a while but one of the few blessings in lockdown is I've had more time to go out and increase my distance. I was then stuck at 5K/3 miles for another while but just gradually increased the distance. I go out running about 3 times a week and on Friday I felt like I had enough in the tank to just go for it and get the 10K!

With my PE teachers it was like they knew how humiliating it was to not be any good but just didn't care. I remember being forced by one teacher to serve in tennis over and over again to a girl who was actually good at it and it took all of my strength to not cry because she was one of my bullies. Every time I served she'd smash the ball back into my side of the court and I'd fail to return. The teacher did that "oh let's try that AGAIN" thing so this went on for what felt like an eternity to 13 year old me.

I was definitely 100% academic but the idea of me being able to bully someone for not getting Physics or not understanding a historical concept is hilarious. Yet the games kids got away with exactly that!

With the running I wish Couch to 5K had existed when I was younger. It's done more for keeping me fit than school ever did.

Netball - I'm 5 foot 3 and unathletic, I was always ALWAYS paired with the 6 foot 2 girl who was really good. :( Games lessons were just the pits.

I like to think there's a more progressive attitude to it these days? Maybe?

I definitely feel for you on the netball thing! I'm only an inch taller than you so if I was marked by a taller girl it went exactly how you'd expect. I remember once I actually managed to fluke a decent intercept and the same teacher who tormented me with tennis stopped the game to make a point about how I'd positioned myself well, the thrower hadn't noticed and that I "have got lovely long legs" so was able to jump up and get the ball. She made us replay the move...only now all the other girls knew where I was and what I was going to do so obviously I didn't get the ball back. That teacher couldn't let me have even that one moment of feeling good about myself?!

I think it's a bit better now definitely. I really hope so anyway as I don't want my nieces and nephews to feel like that. All the adults on both sides of my family are trying to teach the new generation that it doesn't matter how slow you are at something, just getting out there and enjoying yourself is what counts.
