But “brown as a nut” isn’t necessarily non-white. I mean, John Watson is “brown as a nut.”

That's true, but (though I can't say for sure) I expect that contemporary British literature is much less inclined to describe white people who tan easily as 'brown as a nut' than they were in the 19th century. Who knows, though, maybe all Colfer meant was that Short got a lot of time on the fairy tanning beds.
...that reads snarkier than I meant it, but seriously, who knows what he meant exactly?
