How many times does a character need to be described as non-white for them to count as canonically non-white, OP? Is it like a hard number, or does it depend on the number of times they appear in canon?

But “brown as a nut” isn’t necessarily non-white. I mean, John Watson is “brown as a nut.”

That's true, but (though I can't say for sure) I expect that contemporary British literature is much less inclined to describe white people who tan easily as 'brown as a nut' than they were in the 19th century. Who knows, though, maybe all Colfer meant was that Short got a lot of time on the fairy tanning beds.
...that reads snarkier than I meant it, but seriously, who knows what he meant exactly?

DA

We do know what he meant, though? He's given us fancastings that show us what he meant?

Maybe an actual ethnicity reference or point of comparison would be nice. Especially since the character isn’t human?

If it's true that the author of the books has been fan-casting white actors to play the role all along, and the character is depicted as white on the book covers, then it seems like a pretty major stretch to call it whitewashing when they cast a white actor.

Authors have next to no say in what cover art their books get. I've seen books where characters who were very explicitly described as non-white were white on the covers. Cover art means nothing. Now, if she's white in the comics that might be a valid point, if only because they count as a canon, if not necessarily the exact same canon as the books.

Hi I'm from the UK and the cover is shiny and pretty and doesn't have any characters on it.

da - hey, uh, I just did and I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. link specific examples or shut up.

DA: This is the 2002 UK cover on my bookshelf. The original UK covers followed this sort of Book/computer/cube cover template. Not that the UK covers are the Ultimate To Be Respected but this the one that anon above was referring to.

Hi I'm from Australia and we have the same cover but I didn't want to get into the discussion about different editions and all that.
...though having said that, I just did a little googling, and I can't find any editions where Holly Short is a) on the cover and b) clearly white. There's a couple where she's there in the background, but none where she looks anything other than 'Ambiguously Fey'.
