Breaking statues of racist people is bad as it has artistic and historical value.

but if the artistic or historical value serves only to salute a shitty time in history and create a sense of oppression toward certain groups of people, is it really worth saving?

to me, that shit belongs in a museum along with a placard that reads "in memory of a great fuck up, let's not repeat it".

Honestly, I'm just surprised that so many people are so committed to the idea that former Warsaw Pact states should have kept up all their Communist-era statues

I have a personal stake in this as all four of my grandmother's brothers died in the WW2 and I heard her stories about them and about the war. I'm also part Belarusian, a country with the largest life lose from the WW2. I have no interest in politics but I'm sensitive about WW2 statues and monuments, even the ugly ones. I feel like they're important even though I know that the dead don't care.

Some statues don't have artistic or historical value.

Ultimately it should be down to the community IMO.

But what if the act of breaking statues of racist people also has value as art?

the difference between "protest" and "vandalism" shouldn't be whether or not we like the subject of the statue

Maybe the first, although there are also a lot of bad mass-produced or just plain hilariously awful statues of racists out there. But I don’t think I’ve ever learned history from a statue, except “wow I hope this wasn’t done from life, poor ugly bastard.”

Valuing statues is so 2016. No1curr anymore.

lol, true. I remember the news on 'Influencer Julia Slonska defaced an angel sculpture with a hammer'.

If your local government refuses to allow community groups to use proper legal avenues to remove objectionable statues, what is the alternative?
Just suck it up and deal because you're never going to get justice anyway? Yeah, that sounds fun.

So the Germans blowing up monuments and statues dedicated to Hitler and Nazi-ism is bad.

Nah. I dont want to pay for or look at a statue of some long dead cracker who thought owning other human beings was A-ok. We can relegate them to the pages of history books. They do not need monuments.

Then they should be moved to a museum, where they can be displayed with informational plaques providing the full context, including the very racist reasons behind the commissioning of the majority of the ones in the US.
