I am absolutely bewildered by the hypocrisy of some mass protests being OK and others not being OK in the midst of a global pandemic that disproportionately targets the very people whose protests are lauded by the media and state and local governments.

And I think the uptick in cases in the US is at least partially due to all the protests.

And I don't understand how this is a controversial opinion, and in fact, I think the majority of people who haven't been indoctrinated into this weird quasi-religious, ideological cult mentality on the left or right are sitting around as bewildered as I am and wondering why the hell they can't go to work when they see thousands of people crammed in together on the streets.

But anyway I certainly expect it to be a controversial opinion on FS.

The current wave the US is having started too soon to have been the result of the protests. That's Memorial Day Weekend biting you in the ass.

Turns out you don't get an surge from large group activities that take place outside where most people are wearing masks (and the mostly unmasked cops are all upwind of the crowd so the poison gas they're firing at unarmed citizens doesn't blow back in their faces). Seriously, the lack of protest-related spikes has been all over the news. You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

We're at the end of June. The protests started at the beginning of June.

I consume a wide variety of media coverage. Enough to know I can't trust it for facts.

It takes 2 weeks for a wave to start after a mass exposure event. We are now several weeks into a curve that would have started a week ago if it was linked to the protests. Furthermore, the areas that have had the largest protests are not the areas where the spikes are occurring. There are no spikes in Minnesota or Georgia. There are spikes in Arkansas and Utah. The areas where the spikes are occurring are primarily in states that lifted restrictions ahead of schedule because they wanted businesses open for Memorial Day weekend.

I'm not questioning your ability to watch a lot of TV. I'm questioning your ability to look at numbers and understand what you're seeing.

Is there an uptick in cases? I haven't checked the statistics in forever but last I saw it was slowing down.

As someone who went to a BLM protest and thinks the anti-masks protesters are a bunch of whiny ignoramuses, neither is great from a viral spread standpoint, although I’d say the socially distanced, mask wearing crowd at most BLM protests probably did less damage than the proudly maskless, packed in like sardines crowd who wanted haircuts.

But really, you can’t see a difference between risking your life to protest police brutality and the murder of black people by the police, and risking your life insisting that low wage workers have to risk their lives so you can get a haircut or go out drinking at a bar? And aside from the protest, I’ve done nothing but go to work and get groceries and do laundry for months. I got tested for COVID a week after I went to a protest, too. Can’t say the same for the “give me a haircut or give me death” crowd.

Even some epidemiologists have been saying that police brutality, lack of opportunity, and the toll that stress takes on black Americans needs to be challenged, because it’s part of an entire system of oppression that leads to stuff like them dying from COVID in way higher numbers than white people.

AYRT—jfc, you’re a selfish fucker. Haircuts and drinking are less important than peoples’ right to not get murdered by police, whose job is to arrest people, not murder them. If you think that’s partisan, you have a shriveled little raisin for a soul.
