I think we have at least one troll who comes here to wank over wank, who may or may not believe the shit they’re spouting, and a small handful of people who definitely believe some regressive creepy shit. I honestly don’t know why they’re here.

I'd believe it. I'm pretty certain mister "Islam is incompatible with Western liberalism" up there is all one person, for example.
That's why I hate threads like this. "Controversial Opinion" just means "Factually Wrong and Probably Bigoted".

OP of the thread - FWIW i really did want to talk about the masks thing (and I got a lot out of the discussion, I thought it was really helpful for me) and I perhaps naively expected the rest of the threads to be more along those lines and not the western civilization stuff

Only one of them was me. I think a lot of it is that there are a few topics that are really fixed in people's minds right now with everything that's going on.
