It sort of depends on context.

"People don't dress this way." -> Not true.
"Most people wouldn't dress like this in this situation." -> Okay.

If the character is in an actual lab, that mode of dress is not really appropriate, though I've seen and heard about worse violations of lab standards than that. However, if it's a fantasy role-play scenario, it's theme night at a dance club, or they are trying to infiltrate a lab having only seen old Bond movies, then it's fine.
