I think I sort of get the point that you're making. But I think it's really important to define exactly what the problem is with wearing those clothes - I don't know whether the secret is just with the phrasing of the secret. But I think it's really easy to frame the point in such a way that it sounds like wearing those kinds of clothes is bad in and of itself. And if I was someone who wore those clothes, and somebody made the point in that way, I think I absolutely would take offense to it. It's the responsibility of the person making the critique to draw the line why it applies to the fictional characters and not the real people making those choices.

The problem with the secret is that it reeks of "it's your fault you're offended" combined with being willfully blind to the connection between a fashion choice of one person (fictional or not) and another person who makes the same or similar choice in real life. It's dishonest for using the wrong argument, and pushes all responsibility of any perceived insult on, well, the person perceiving.

This

I think as far as characters who wear those clothes go, it isn't a problem itself regardless of the designers intent. I don't care if they did it for fanservice/ratings. Any character who dresses the way any real people dress is fine by themselves.

If all the female characters in a thing dress like that, I think that's when it becomes reasonable to criticize. Because that's not realistic. Some women really dress like that, and it's fine for media to show it. A lot of women don't dress like that, and media should reflect that too.

came here to say this and you said it so 10000% agree. If the people hating on a character design hate it precisely because, in their words/opinion, those skimpy clothes mean she's a slut and a sloppy mess and all kinds of other unwarranted judgments of person's clothes = person's bad life choices, then yeah, of course people who dress like that irl are going to feel judged, because they are being judged indirectly and I don't blame them for feeling that way.

Context matters but a lot of people who nag about sexily-dressed female characters seem like closeted misogynists to me tbh. Have you considered that stiletto heels look fucking awesome? Who gives a shit that they're hard to walk in?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree it looks good but I think it's sort of a problem if a vast majority of depictions of women in specific kinds of media are designed around looking sexy as hell regardless of any other considerations, especially when realistically it would be incredibly impractical to do so

The fact that they're hard to walk in is...kind of the problem. I know it's the thing now to "weaponize femininity" but it's not misogynist to just wonder every now and then WHY we just so easily accept these kinds of performances and physical risks as "sexy" (and why it's only women who are expected to perform this way)

Wearing stiletto heels can literally damage your feet.

And they're not appropriate for an office setting. In an office you should dress like a professional not like you're on a date. And no, it doesn't mean you have to dress like a man. There is plenty of pretty and feminine clothing that isn't sexy.

criticizing how male-creators often dress their women like their personal wank-fodder isn't ~secret misogyny~, it's noting a goddamn problem in how women are often treated like pieces of meat instead of human, especially if all the men in a canon are dressed sensibly.

there are ways to have someone be dressed for the correct situation and be sexy without being absurd, it's really not hard to do.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
When costume designers put actresses and their stunt doubles in short shorts and high heels, actual human people are injured. Being a Strong Independent Woman doesn't actually shield a person from road rash and broken ankles.
I'm sorry if that makes your boner sad.

It's not that heels are hard to walk in. It's that they ruin my knees - and not even stiletto heels, just medium-length wedge heels are enough.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I get it but you also sound like an unfun nag.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people find comfortable shoes and, like, not getting your hair wrapped around a motor? Pretty fun!

There's a type of person who vocally dislikes every female character unless they're fat/old/plain and it really rubs me the wrong way. The goal should be to have more women instead of trying to remove the ones who are sexy.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, sure. And when the balance of female characters is actually less than 80% Young Conventionally Attractive & Always Well-Dressed, that's a concern we can give time to. Until then, I'm gonna continue flying the flag of "Why are all these women wearing high heels to crime scenes?"

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Petition for more fat/old/plain female characters IMO because I would love to see more of them!

This wasn't even about what the women looked like, it was that they were dressed dumb. It's a real quick way to ruin immersion, depending on the setting. But good on you getting a dig in on the unattractive.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-01 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I am fat, old, and plain, and getting more so every day. If the ratio of women who were beautiful, young, and sexy to those like myself onscreen was even half of what it was in real life, and there were ever female main characters who were fat, old, and plain, maybe it wouldn’t piss me off so much.

Well, Scully always dressed appropriately and she was a huge sex symbol, so why the hell not? (Even in Mulder's AI-induced fantasy world with the sexy sexy nurses, Scully was dressed in a suit and regular shoes!)

It sort of depends on context.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"People don't dress this way." -> Not true.
"Most people wouldn't dress like this in this situation." -> Okay.

If the character is in an actual lab, that mode of dress is not really appropriate, though I've seen and heard about worse violations of lab standards than that. However, if it's a fantasy role-play scenario, it's theme night at a dance club, or they are trying to infiltrate a lab having only seen old Bond movies, then it's fine.

i think its clear sometimes that character design doesn't match the actual character's state goals and occupations AND how other people treat them, so if the argument is "X does happen" then yeah, it's a little oblivious to not get that the real question is "why is X happening here, and if there's an in-universe reason what is the combo trying to say and is it worth saying?"

When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don't expect to see a zebra. Usually it's horses.

And when you see incongruously sexualized character design or costuming, don't expect to see serious feminist writing behind it. Usually it's a horndog director selling a product to his own demographic.

I object to those comments as soon as we start talking about "Real Women (tm)."

"Real Women (tm) don't dress up like that."

"Real Women (tm) don't care about that."

"Real Women (tm) have curves!"

Etc.

Meanwhile there are women in dresses caring about things and having all kinds of body types that are getting put down so we can talk about fictional characters.

I prefer to critiques that are targeted like, "It doesn't make sense that Claire would wear heals to work when she works in a dinosaur zoo on a tropical island with lots of unpaved areas, and I don't like that they made the actress/stunt-women run around the forest in heals," instead of "A Real Woman (tm) wouldn't wear heals all day."
