i think its clear sometimes that character design doesn't match the actual character's state goals and occupations AND how other people treat them, so if the argument is "X does happen" then yeah, it's a little oblivious to not get that the real question is "why is X happening here, and if there's an in-universe reason what is the combo trying to say and is it worth saying?"

Exactly - like, if this woman is a scientist and the characters keep telling us how tough and humourless and work-focused she is, why is she wearing her hair in perfectly-sculpted waves down to her elbows? Why is her makeup so good - in fact, why is she wearing makeup at all? Why is she wearing such a tight skirt? These are all things that real people can do, because real people are complicated, but unless the story gives a reason for it, it seems pretty likely that the director or the costume designer were just horny.
