you know I think there is a lot of interesting things regarding power, who has it, and what it means to have and use it, going on in Cuckoo (because while Ratchet has institutional power and misuses it, the institution never has and never will protect her from male violence, and it's basically revealed that her power is only soft at best), but......she's a terrible person who both thinks she's right and enjoys being justified in hurting people.

It's....fine to dislike those characters and think they're contemptible, and I think usually the people who have sympathy for her are understating just how much institutional power she is given (and I think the book understates how much misogyny is violent in of itself, and I question the decision to use a woman with authority that was almost certainly backed by a male doctor the sole face of insidious institutionalization but that's the author). Or rather, I don't think misused state power and the misogyny are balancing concerns. They're not on the same axis at all, they're just various methods of power available to different people for different reasons.
