Oh, good, you again. You're still wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Do...do we have a nurse Ratched apologist anon?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep!

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
They literally did a story with Joker as McMurphy, you don’t think there’s any similarity? Like how they both promote chaos and anarchy to Batman and Ratched’s law and order.

DA and admittedly it's been a while since I read the book but I feel like Ratched's approach of lobotomizing people does not really comport with Batman's moral code

As a nurse, it was never Ratched's call to do a lobotomy. That was up to the doctor in charge; nurses didn't have that much power.

Being able to draw comparisons between things doesn't make them identical. Batman... actually isn't a great character in a lot of ways either, but he's basically a superhero fighting a supercriminal in a pulp superhero narrative, not a medical professional with a duty of care and responsibility for the well-being of patients under his supervision in a relatively serious and realistic drama.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So did the Simpsons.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nurse Ratched anon and Daenerys anon are the same person.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ratched wasn't a hero for 99 percent of her story

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree but I don't think that Nurse Ratched Anon does

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Nor was Danaerys actually.

(Anonymous) 2020-06-30 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Was she a villain when she was freeing slaves or battling the undead?

you know I think there is a lot of interesting things regarding power, who has it, and what it means to have and use it, going on in Cuckoo (because while Ratchet has institutional power and misuses it, the institution never has and never will protect her from male violence, and it's basically revealed that her power is only soft at best), but......she's a terrible person who both thinks she's right and enjoys being justified in hurting people.

It's....fine to dislike those characters and think they're contemptible, and I think usually the people who have sympathy for her are understating just how much institutional power she is given (and I think the book understates how much misogyny is violent in of itself, and I question the decision to use a woman with authority that was almost certainly backed by a male doctor the sole face of insidious institutionalization but that's the author). Or rather, I don't think misused state power and the misogyny are balancing concerns. They're not on the same axis at all, they're just various methods of power available to different people for different reasons.
