I agree that it would be better if the characters addressed it clearly, so that putting the clans/politics over everything was more of a conscious choice.

We did have a moment like that for Lan Xichen, though. Remember that scene where Jin Zixun forced alcohol on Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji? Lan Xichen put politics and avoiding a confrontation over following ethical rules he believed in and drank it. Lan Wangji refused and was not trying to cause a scene but definitely wasn't trying to defuse the situation either, until Wei Wuxian drank the alcohol for him.

Sure, it does not give deep insight in Lan Xichen's motivations, but it is a nice bit of characterisation that sets up the whole dynamic well, doesn't it?
