You were that country once. You will be again, I'm sure. There are pretty much no countries without blood in their history.

I agree that American ideals are great and it's good to remember the long history of people in this country fighting in the most uncompromising terms for those ideals. At the same time I don't think it's ever been the case that America has been that country. I think it's important to remember it in that way - there have always been a lot of people in this country fighting for its ideals, and there have always been a lot of people in this country consciously choosing bigotry and prejudice and inequality instead.

That's how I feel about it. There was never a point where America naturally lived up to its ideals; America always had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, against its will, by a lot of very unpopular people, into trying to live up to its ideals.

This. We've been better than we are now, but we've never been what we've said we are, we've never been the ideal we hold our self up as. It has always taken blood and tears to get us to move forward even a bit, and then there is the backlash and we stop moving forward or step backwards.
