I just can't agree that it's disrespectful for an adaptation to differ even very dramatically from the original.

I see where you're coming from, but again the sticking point for me is that there isn't a wide sprawling tradition of adaptations of Discworld like there is for say, Sherlock Holmes, or Robin Hood, or Phantom of the Opera. It's a very singular series, beloved by many, and its creator only died a few years ago. To me, this is on the scale of stealing someone else's intellectual property and filing the serial numbers off.
