(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)but for me at least i usually only get attached to one or two characters, while everyone else is at an 'they're fine' level, but i'm not invested in where their story goes beyond general curiosity. i just don't love more than a few characters in any media i watch, never have, never will. it's never impacted my ability to enjoy things.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)I do occasionally have shows where I care about many of the characters. I cared about almost everyone on BSG, for example. But I also wasn't fannish about BSG and didn't strongly ship any pairings for that show. So while I cared about all the characters quite a bit, I didn't care about any of the characters SO SO SO SO DAMN MUCH OMG HOW DO I HOLD ALL THESE FEELINGS?!! the way I do with my ships.
If I have a ship, though, then yeah, I care about the characters in the ship at an intensity level of eleven out of ten. And then there's everybody else. Everybody else is fine.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)1. Because my faves are almost always main characters who get a lot of screentime and are integral to the story.
2. Because I love my ship with an intensity that is basically impossible to overstate. I am obsessed with my ship. My ship is the giant dopamine fix I am never not jonesing for. My ship is joy. My ship is love.
3. Because often, I watch things for the art of it all. I just want to experience writing/film-making that has something sharp and perceptive to convey. So I don't need to care about the characters on more than a basic human level, because I'm watching for what the thing has to say and how it's going to say it.
