Of course, you can make the argument that the Doctor isn't ethnic English either but Gallifrien. So, the ethnic make up of the actor shouldn't matter.

I suppose so, but I tend to disagree with the secret-maker in that regard as well. The Doctor can be whatever ethnicity he damn well wants to be.

People seem to forget that English is an ethnic group all of its own.

That would be because it isn't.

How so? They have their own look, their own language, their own food, their own customs and history. How is it not an ethnic group?

Well, some people have claimed that since the Act Of Union with Scotland, neither England nor Scotland technically exist - and people like Gerry Addams and members of our own government have claimed that the English don't exist, but if we don't, then what *are* we?! O.o So no, *I* don't get how we English aren't an "ethnic group" either; sure, we're a mixture of intermarriages between the Romans/Saxons/Jutes/Normans/Danes/etc who've passed through over the millenia, but show me a race that's "pure" and I'll eat my own head.

I agree. Look at the Italians. Everyone considers them an ethnic group easily without question but just about every neighboring country has gone through the place and left little footprints.

Ethnicity, cultural background, and nationality have a lot of overlap but they aren't the same thing. Language, food, and customs are cultural factors not ethnic ones. History's a matter of nationality. As for the common look, what colour hair and eyes do the ethnic english have? In terms of ethnicity you can't really break it down any more finely than white western european before you get shedloads of false positives.

And no they don't. Eastern Europeans (You can really see this in Germans) have yellow undertones in their skin pigment, Southern Europeans have olive undertones and Northern Europeans have pink. This due to their diet and environment. There is no one shade of whiteness.

The German stereotypical look is high cheekbones with long narrow faces, while stereotypical Spanish have almond shaped eyes and strong brows, The Irish have round heads with large square foreheads, The stereotypical Scottish look for men is of large eyes and a strong jawline. For the English it's smallish noses, fleshy faces and high foreheads.

And as wiki says, An ethnic group is a group of human beings whose members identify with each other, usually on the basis of preferential endogamy (marrying within a social group) and/or a presumed or real common ancestry.[1][2] Ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness[3] and the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioral or biological traits,[1][4] real or presumed, as indicators of contrast to other groups.[5].

So, yes, food, language and customs are part of one's ethnicity. Or have you never eaten "ethnic food"?

Oi! Don't put words in my mouth, that was not what I said. I said that you get false positives, which you do, because the various conquests and migrations between the various western european countries mean that similarities in appearance are greater than the differences. The reason why I said Western european was to make it clear that I wasn't talking about the eastern, northern (scandinavian) or southern (mediteranean) europeans.

The important word in that wiki you quote is "presumed". Because there is often a correlation between ethnicity and culture it's presumed that certain cultural traits are part of one's ethnicity, but they aren't necessarily. To give you an example, my cousin and I are both of white western european ethnicity. However we have very different cultures and somewhat different language and food, as I grew up in England and he grew up in the US. What he calls soccer I call football, he celebrates Thanksgiving whereas I celebrate Bonfire Night, and he has this strange belief that peanut butter and jelly (or jam as I'd call it) is an appropriate sandwich filling. Culturally, I have far more in common with Paterson Joseph even though we are of different ethnicities.

So technically speaking *I* don't exist because I'm English?! O.o

Eh? If you were born and raised in England then you're English. But so's Paterson Joseph. It's a nationality/regional identity thing, not an ethnicity thing.

I'd still argue that there's an English ethnicity - I don't see how it can be otherwise, but yeah, it's also an identity/choice thing. :¬)

B.S. on whiteness is a social institution. I don't care what you say. You are not white. There is no such thing as white. And if you say it is, then you are fooling yourself.

You have roots. You an ancestors had a country of origin and therefore had a ethnicity all of their own. You have only forgotten them or are too lazy to look them up.

1. I know my genealogy for 10 generations back, minimum, on any branch of my family tree. I also know the family crest on both sides, and the motto on my mother's side. (The motto on my father's side appears to have been lost to the sands of time or something.) I damn well know the history of my European ancestors, not to mention the name of the Cree guy that married into our family 8 generations back. Don't assume.

If you know your ethnic background, why the devil are you denying it by calling yourself "white"? It's an insult to your family history.
