172 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is the new bipolar -- the thing people claim to have to get away with murder while the people really suffering from it are having the worst damn time. Oh, and a lot of times they exhibit the exact opposite symptoms, as mentioned in an earlier comment re: Aspergers. (Didn't realise 'til I started reading the comments that there is no apostrophe in said word ... shows what I know.)

And yeah, I know fandom's a place for it ... but from what little I know, someone generally suffering from it (Aspergers, not fandom) would not be the sort to pounce someone in a public place.

I do wonder if some of these people have been told by others that they are Aspie, or might be, and in a sort of self-diagnostic way go with it subconsciously because it feels handy.

Er, GENUINELY suffering from it.

It's not as clear cut as that. For someone with Aspergers they may have seen other people glomp people and figured the rule "in fandom a way to show you like someone is to hug them" and "glomping is the way to show you are fun". The problem is they can't see any of the nuances of the rules such as "They have to like you back" or "Wait for them to ask first".

Conversely, they may hate being glomped themselves, but they don't generalize that to "other people may feel the same way". My son will tackle his friends, sister, me, his dad, but will go nuts if any of us try to grab him. Its a matter of being in control of whats going on.

Of course, the thing as soon as the person recoils, they should learn that they got the rule wrong, and then try to revise the rule. They should apologize but not make excuses and learn from the experience. But a lot of people who don't like to be glomped don't verbally object, or don't do it obviously enough for the Aspie person to pick up on it, and they can actually go quite a long time doing something reeeeally obnoxious before someone takes them aside and calls them on it.

The big difference is that Aspie people should be genuinely horrified that they made you uncomfortable. If they just blow you off, like it's your problem, they are just being jerks.

Same. When I find out that I've fucked up, I start crying.
