fuck men

pieces of shit

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
well. often, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing I do wonder about a lot is: is it possible to build a viable concept of masculinity that is not a total heap of shit? I think it must be in principle but it's quite hard to figure out what it would look like or where to begin (other than "don't be evil").

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What does this even mean? There are plenty of fine "masculine" men.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If there are good people within masculinity, it doesn't necessarily mean that masculinity as a whole is good

Depends on their level of hygiene.

never met a straight guy who wasn't hung up on looks

(Anonymous) 2020-07-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I've met a lot of people of any description who didn't care at least somewhat about looks.

I just think that's an interesting trait to pick out, in particular.

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2020-07-07 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god, here we go.
"my wife cheated on me but it's ok because she's a model and looks like Barbie!"
"this woman has no acting talent but we're going to put her in lots of movies and TV shows because she gave some producer a stiffie"
meanwhile women like me who aren't pretty either get ignored or insulted. I'm fucking tired of it.

As an ugly woman, I can't really blame men; I wouldn't date me either! And more to the point, I wouldn't date men who have the traits I dislike about myself, physical or mental, but the physical icks include that I'm short, fat, and hairy. I don't mind so much since I'm pretty close to asexual, but before I figured that out I used to be mad at myself for being a hypocrite about physical attractiveness. I don't get to be pissed at men for liking pretty people if I do too.

I wouldn't mind dating a guy who wasn't great looking if he had a really great personality but even lousy looking guys still won't have anything to do with a woman if she's not pretty.

I mean if you're looking for a potential partner, isn't that what most people use as a gauge? I'm a straight woman and I won't date a guy if I'm not attracted to him from the start.

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2020-07-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
so, basically, what you're saying is women like me who are not good looking don't deserve to be loved and we should just accept it.

Everybody responding to this is focusing on, "Everybody cares about looks to some extent." And like, yeah, to some extent. But you're also very much right that straight men, on average, prioritize looks in their potential partners way, way more than straight women, on average, prioritize looks in their potential partners.

Which frankly, sucks for all women, not just the ones who aren't considered good looking. Because what it actually stems from is the tendency for straight men to perceive women's value, first and foremost, by how much they'd like to fuck them. Which is not about their value as people but about their value as potential objectives to be obtained.

As someone who is generally placed somewhere between good-looking and very good-looking on the theoretical "looks scale," it took me until I was about nineteen or twenty before I realized that the majority of the men I talked to, who always acted like what I had to say was ~so interesting~ and that I was ~such an interesting person~, were not actually interested in what I had to say or who I was, unless that information could give them the key to getting in my pants.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-08 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Is there some kind of material evidence supporting the idea that this is significantly more a priority for straight men than for straight women?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-08 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Women as well. Humans in general. Seagulls are assholes, too.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-08 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Also, swans, holy crap. And moose, like whoa, they are already hugely imposing, do they also need to be so damn ornery?

You shouldn't fuck pieces of shit. That sounds rather unsanitary.

You should also be more selective with your men, but the trick is to see them as human first and not simply condemn them as a whole group you have no chance of understanding.
