This, seriously. Hated Anna, hated Bela, hate Ruby. I loved Jo and Ellen. Where did the real women go? :\

Ellen "wasn't sexy enough" and Jo didn't succeed as a "love interest" so they both had to go. And people wonder why I don't want to get attached to characters billed as love interests. I LIKED HER SO MUCH BETTER after Kripke and Alona figured out that she was meant to be the little sister, not the lover.

Re: 149

[identity profile] continuum.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, they tried to bring Ellen back, but I think there were issues with money. :[ They had to take off Katie Cassidy and Lauren Cohen for the same reason; Katie was originally supposed to have reprised her role as Ruby.

Re: 149

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. My thing is that I haven't even liked any of the "love interests" on the show... Jo excepting, but I never really saw her as a love interest to begin with. I'm also not a big 'shipper, so that might explain it.

I just want to beat the fans who screamed so hard for Jo and Ellen to go, seriously. They're the same ones now who are fangirling over Ruby and the other vapid Mary Sues (yes, I consider Ruby, Bela, and especially Anna to be textbook Mary Sues) Kripke's brought in under the guise of "strong female characters". :\

Re: 149

[personal profile] cleverthylacine 2008-12-10 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I never saw Jo as a love interest either. I want to know who these fans that screamed for Jo and Ellen to go ARE, because my ship (Sam/Dean) usually gets blamed for that and I've seen no evidence whatsoever that we wanted them gone. We did not want Dean/Jo, but that's different.

I will admit that I don't mind Sam/Ruby but I kind of completely loathed Bela. Anna...there's nothing there to hate. How do you hate Anna? There's no THERE there. :)

I don't particularly want "strong female characters" on this show though. Not because I don't like women, but because this is a BUDDY show, not a TEAM show. Most of the really irritating people I've seen calling for "female characters" can't seem to accept that. I liked Jo and Ellen, but I did not want them in every frakkin ep. And this IS a problem that I have with Ruby. Even Castiel and Bobby are not in every ep. And I don't want ANY characters of ANY gender, male female or other, to show up in EVERY FRAKKIN EP, because this is not a TEAM show.

Re: 149

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean - when I say that I want strong female characters, I don't mean I want them in every episode - I just want them in the show somewhere. As opposed to Ruby, and Bela, and Anna, whom I can't stand and who I think are simply Mary Sue caricatures. If we have to have girls in recurring roles, basically, I want them to be girls who feel real, who are strong.

I agree about not wanting anyone but the boys in the recurring, every-episode roles; I would never ask for any other characters in the spotlight. I just want those supporting roles to be decent, too.

Re: 149

[identity profile] overstreets.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This, EXACTLY. Anna was the definition of a Mary Sue. I found it hard to care about her ~*PERFECTNESS*~.

Re: 149

(Anonymous) 2008-12-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Anna grated on me so much more than Ruby ever has. But then I'm beginning to like Ruby quite a bit. Don't ask me to explain why, though. I keep trying to figure out why Ruby's growing on me and the answer's not coming. It's just happening for some reason. =\

I liked the way they wrote Bela in the final episode and how they didn't dumb down the boys -- Dean was in top form confronting her -- but still made her sympathetic and a strong figure (she refused till the very end to divulge why she did what she did and preferred to let Dean keep hating her instead). I didn't mind her in the first episode, either, where she was a part of the plot and Dean outsmarted her (in the apartment) as much as she outsmarted him (stole his lottery tickets).

I totally hated that ep. Bela was a sociopathic thief that we were supposed to hate and we did hate her. She was a VILLAIN. Suddenly it's all BOO HOO FOR BELA.

No thanks. Not all female characters have to be nice. And the ones that aren't should have the courage of their lack of convictions and STAY EVIL.

Re: 149

(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Why does it have to be one or the other? Just because we know where she's coming from doesn't mean she's suddenly GOOD. She's still bad. She's still a sociopath because she still doesn't care about people.

I know you're not directly intending this meaning, but this thought process nevertheless is suggestive of the idea that anyone who's had bad things happen to them, it's okay for them to be bad. That by having a traumatized background, it somehow makes a bad person automatically good again.

It's not and it doesn't. I feel weird using a fictional character as a nugget of wisdom, but Henriksen summed it up pretty well, really: "'Cause everybody's got a sob story, but not everybody becomes a killer."

So yeah, Bela's got a sob story. That doesn't make what she's done okay or even right. And it sure as hell doesn't make her nice; everything she's done over the years remain amoral; knowing why she's taken the path she has doesn't suddenly transform all the times she stole for money into something saintly and wonderful. All it does is give us insight into her mindset and where she's coming from. It's a reason, not an excuse.

I liked Katie!Ruby quite a bit as well and Bela was a fab foil for the boys... this season the female characters... well, leave much to be desired is an understatement. Barring Pam, I love Pam.

Re: 149

(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, except Bela stopped being a sociopathic thief who did shit because she wanted to and start being motivated by the fact she was abused by her dad as a child. How much more fucking cliche can you get?

And instead of having fun like the rest of the episodes she appeared in, she spent the episode freaking out and started crying on the phone while Dean told her she should have asked for help sooner. With no acknowledgment from anyone that he was being a hypocritical douchebag.

Boring and annoying for you to watch.

Also: She's an angel, Christ!

Does she break up your ship?

I am just lashing out because I am a hurt and angry child.

I've had some cookies now and I feel better, so I will attempt decency for a moment: Why did you have a problem with them making her an angel? The reasons for their doing so seem pretty obvious, you know? And, she was the first angel to appear in the show if I'm correct? Did you not want to see an angel appear at all? It seems logical that after the endless stream of demons, an angel would show up after long.

And then, I mean... It just seems so counterintuitive to criticize an angel for being perfect and holy and immaculate. Isn't that what angels do? What was the angel supposed to be like?

Best comment ever.

Ellen, Jo and Pam is pretty fucking ace too.

Anna was the epitome of a Sue and the actress was as irritating as GC.

I liked Jo a lot, and she did have that sibling vibe going on with them. I liked the idea of the "Roadhouse" family and hated that it all blew up in AHBL. *sigh*

It was Pam's comeback without her eyes that sold me on her. I really want to see more of her, and I'd give an appendage to get Tamara back from "The Magnificent Seven."
