I have a degree in history and I find Hetalia surprisingly funny...

...although, maybe it's not so surprising.

My area of interest is Soviet foreign policy and general interwar period international relations, and I think that Hetalia is fucking win.

I suppose most would think I'd find it annoying and/or offensive, but I don't. If you're really a 20th century historian, you develop a sense of humour about genocide, trenches, nuclear weapons, and racial discrimination.

Is it politically correct? No. Is it necessary to save your sanity when you study all these things for a living? Yes. Sometimes you have to laugh about how Stalin killed way more people than Hitler. It's just the way some people deal with things.

In short, don't be embarassed or feel badly about it. We all need a good laugh about these uncomfortable things sometimes.

Or Mao Zedong. People tend to forget about that little rascal, too.

I always forget about Mao -- I'm generally not that familiar with Asian history at all.

Besides. 19-20th century history IS serious business, and lots of horrible things happened that trump pretty much everything that came before them, but let's face it, it's a hot issue because it's so recent and fresh in the memory if humankind. Nobody cares about the 30 Years' War anymore, never mind the fact that it ravaged Europe more than anything ever before. Even the French Revolution is not really regarded as a Serious Business anymore and it was a goddamn bloodbath where people gathered prisoners into large groups and used cannons to shoot at them. And there was the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre and the whole war of religions. And so on, and so on.

And Hetalia is just a silly webcomic and as such, it goddamn owns. Besides, it's not only about 20th century history. (I majored in Medieval English literature and history and I love the corresponding bits. It was a bit weird to read about Wulfstan in Hetalia, of all things, but not any more weird than reading Japanese essays about Beowulf.)

Even though 19th-20th century history is fresher in our minds, I still don't see why people get so butthurt about a lot of the things that have happened...

I guess maybe I'm desensitized or something -- or not easily offended. We've been making fun of these events since they happened and, IMHO people not being able to laugh at them is the same as suggesting that we shouldn't talk about them at all. The more we familiarize ourselves with these kinds of tragedies (through humour or serious discussion), the easier it'll be to accept them, learn from them, and move on.

Or something. I'm at work and at the end of my day, my brain isn't functioning particularly well...

The way I see it, there's stuff that's just not funny, period. I just can't laugh about say, the way the Polish army used cavalry against German tanks, to say nothing of the systematic murder of hundreds of thousands of people during and after WWII, etc. However, this doesn't mean that I see all this unfunny stuff when I look at anything that has something to do with history. I don't say "HOLOCAUST!!" whenever I look at the iron cross or a Messerschmitt plane, or "GULAG!" or "1956!" (I'm Hungarian) when I look at the red star or a Soviet tank. (Unlike many, many of my countrymen who apparently can't understand that the USSR is no more and we're not in danger of becoming a satellite state again - so they still think that Russia is still out to get us and that all socialists are really communists in disguise. Okay, ~50 years of ingrained thinking is hard to change, but still, why do they feel it's necessary to pass it on to the younger generations? Or the whole Trianon business. Yes, it was horrible back in the day, yes, it got us into WWII, yes, it still affects us even today, but mostly because people just can't get the fuck over it.)

As you said, people have been making fun of these things and events even during it happened, there were jokes about the war during the war, there were jokes about Stalin and show trials and whatnot, etc. etc. I think it's important to learn and remember, and it's very sad to see people, especially young people stuck in the past so much that they can't distance themselves from it to view it objectively and maybe even laugh at it.

Or, eh, something like that. Sorry for ranting. =_= (It's past midnight over here and I'm still supposed to be working...)
