104 A lot of people have relatives like those.

105 Yay! Hana Yori Dango! Doumyouji~ <3

121 Giant Squid of World Ending is cooler (so Lovecraft)

124 Fuckin' word. Also, just a random note -- I memorized the Jabberwocky poem for a talent show in the 4th grade, but chickened out after getting taunted into oblivion at tryouts by my stupid peers who would rather see someone do the Running Man to a MC Hammer song than see someone deliver a poetry reading.

137 I'm not even really into BDSM but even I thought the part where she was taunting the tied-up Prince Philip was hot. Don't worry, you're not the only one who saw sexual overtones.

139 Well... the dude was probably a repressed homosexual. But yeah, that is pretty wrong.

140 Eva didn't do such a terrible job as far as the ideas conveyed. I mean, obviously it could've been better, but they got the idea of angels totally spot on, IMO. And WTF, do you really expect the Japanese to know any Hebrew? In any case, I LOL'ed at the CLAMP Haggadah passage. Now I want a CLAMP Passover Haggadah. Maybe my husband would actually participate in a Jewish holiday for once.

141 Since this came right after 140, let me just take the time to express my disappointment that this festival chose to misappropriate a Biblical (well, apocryphal) character. Lilith wasn't even human, you guys. What's wrong with Eve? Jezebel would've been rockin'. But Lilith? Come on. Rejecting humanity isn't feminist.

... And Lillith was appropriated by the Jewish culture from preexisting Mesopotamian folklore. I believe Lillith Fair was named because of the more recent and popular folklore that Lillith was Adam's first wife, who left him because she didn't want to submit. This was the aspect of the tale that most people heard of in the Mid-90's, and hence the title. To what extent appropriating a mythical figure for a music festival is feminist or not...\o_O/?

Dude, what about Jewish religion wasn't? Most of it was. Who cares. Every near-eastern religion ripped off of another religion, none of them are truly "original".

What I want to know is what the fuck is wrong with Eve. It seems like people would rather pick Lilith over Eve because she seems more "independent" or whatever, but Eve brought humanity knowledge of good and evil, the ability to choose, not to mention she's the mythical mother of humanity. Much cooler than some bitch who ran off and spawned a bunch of demon kids.

Whatever, my real point is that people should read religious myths before appropriating figures from them.

I can't help but feel that you're missing the point. Eve has been held up for, you know, ever as the person who brought on the fall of man. She was made from part of Adam's body for the purpose of being a companion for him, and to be submissive to him. If you've heard three religious fundy rants about women's place, then I'm willing to bet that at least one of them mentioned Eve as one of the reasons why. While there may be, and I have heard, alternate interpretations of the Adam and Eve story and relationship dynamics, it is pretty fundamentally weighed down with sexist baggage at this point.

If you want to get away from that image, Eve is not a figure you go for. There might be arguments to be made for reclaiming her, but in the end, I think they were looking for an entirely alternate model for being female. And you know, in the end, some people would rather be a bitch who ran off and spawned a bunch of demon children than submissive scapegoat for all of the woes of mankind.

I actually think you're being a little naive in assuming that the appropriation was made without knowledge that Lilith wasn't exactly a nice lady.

It's not my fault that Christians totally misinterpreted Jewish religion.

Well fuck, the way you hear women talk about her, she might as well be the greatest religious figure ever (despite the fact that she was never technically a person... the whole point was that she rejected humanity, both Adam AND Eve, but whatever).

Anyway, whatever. I get your point, and I guess you get mine.

And WTF, do you really expect the Japanese to know any Hebrew?

No, but it's called research, and not doing it is shoddy, which is why I don't particularly respect them. If it had been random banging on a Hebrew keyboard, I wouldn't have said anything, but going to the trouble of copying out a random stuff just seems really lazy to me. They went that far, couldn't they have at least done it right...?
