So long as I'm bitching about sues and overreactions, I hate that the way you represent Sues is by having one of these dolls and making them look sufficiently pretty and slightly out of the ordinary. None of those are particuarly appealing but why am I the only one who thinks a character should look distinctive? That doesn't mean they have to sparkle or wear ridiculous and impractical dress everywhere, but they don't have to walk around in a grey frock either.

No, this was a secret I made a while back and then posted recently in a big batch of them. At the time I was angry HULK SMASH. Now, I don't really care. My friend has dropped WoW, so no more ignoring me for half an hour at a time in order to go on raids or what-the-fuck-ever or spending all her time making my eyes spin talking about pallies and aggro and other shit I neither care about nor understand.

But I'll probably continue to be an asshole.

I'd kind of like to blame you for it and project my own anger onto you, dear anon, but too many dumbasses let WoW eat their lives and I know that so I shall just move on.

If you can't be ignored for 'half an hour' I'd say you're just being too sensitive to it.

But I side with you on hating it and being ignored for it generally - my boyfriend plays for over 12 hours a day. And hearing about it is boring.

I'm interested enough in psych, soc, anthro to want to analyze fictional characters and worlds, that's not my issue. My issue is the whole "I AM A PSYCH MAJOR" presentation of what is really an opinion.

I also just really disagree with the conclusions. Textbook criteria is only so valuable. I mean, I think they're much more likely to become disturbed assassins given their upbringing than incestuous brothers (especially given that their sexual orientation probably would prevent them from having an incestuous relationship in reality anyway).

There have been cases of brother sibling incest where the men in question are otherwise straight. Not the I'm saying that wincest is the ONE TRU INTERPRETATION ZOMG!!1!1!!, just y'know, incest relationships are kind of a special case and the factors involved in starting an incestuous relationship or not are not necessarily going to be anything like the factors you would use to choose whether to get into a non-incestuous relationship with someone.

P.S. Disturbed!assassin!Winchester fic? Sounds awesome.

There have been cases of just about everything. The fact that it has happened somewhere, to someone, doesn't change anything.

And you're right, but that's because incest is usually abusive and coercive. I'm working on the premise that we're talking about incest between consenting adults. Generally speaking, a consenting relationship free from any pressure has you acting in accordance with your sexual orientation.

Ha! Yes, good point, I probably shouldn't use that kind of example to make a point if I have no statistics on how likely that kind of thing actually is.

Though for the most part I don't think the actually probability of the Winchesters sleeping together matters that much to wincesters. I mean, if someone comes along and says "Here are some reasons why it's more plausible than it could be!" then they'll probably all peer over and go "Ooo! Fascinating!", but strict adherence to realism is not actually that common of a fannish trait.

When it comes to things like secret 161, I think it's more often a case of 'There are ways that this could be done somewhat realistically, and it would be really awesome to explore those paths too.' rather than 'PSYCHOLOGY SAYS THE WINCHESTERS ARE GAY FOR EACH OTHER STOP HOOKING THEM UP WITH GIRLS'. That the Winchesters are straight and like to sleep with girls that are unrelated to them is always (um, barring some incredibly implausible decisions on the part of TPTB) going to be a more plausible interpretation of canon, because that's what canon actually shows us. It might show us that those heterosexual relationships are not as significant as Sam and Dean's sibling relationship, but it definitely shows them as being more sexual than Sam and Dean's bond. (Of course, it doesn't help here that western culture tends to heavily conflate "most significant emotional relationship" with "sexual relationship". To the extent that you could argue that using western cultural coding they are showing us sexual subtext. But that's more because western ideals of romance are really screwed up than because of anything inherent to Sam and Dean's bond.)

Anyway, given that it's implausible already, why not make Sam/Dean one of the rare cases where two straight adult brothers have a consensual sexual relationship with each other but no other men? (Although actually, I think most wincesters interpret the boys as gay or bi. And how plausible that is is a whole other kettle of fish.)

Oh, there's no reason not to. It's just that the pretense of this secret (and fannish attitudes like it) make me absolutely crazy.

Because a lot of people I know think hotheaded characters are annoying, and when they find out what I ship -- a lot of times they go "Well I don't ship it because I think Character X is an annoying hothead..." etc. -- especially if they ship the other character in the pairing I like with someone else.

Kind of hard to tell these people that I'm naturally drawn towards those types of characters. *sigh*

No, but they have ignored my saying that and continued to bash the character I like, which coupled with my hotheadedness has not turned out well.

Which brings us back to "Why is it a secret if you've already told everybody?"

psych students have low self-esteem and often feel inadequate. they try to cover their image issues with exaggerated emphasis on their credentials or intelligence. as a person who majored in psychology, i am qualified to say this.

I'm halfway between laughing and crying BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD PSYCH STUDENTS SAYING SUCH THINGS ABOUT THEIR PEERS.
