Inspired by #7 - Cultural Elements You Wish You Saw More of

Inspired by #7, what are some elements of your culture you wish would make appearances in popular media more often/if at all, because know one knows about it?

I once wrote a fic that involved a lot of blue music (so constant references to the artists - J.B. Lenoir, Ma Rainey, etc.) and one blues song involved a Greek musician, and I mentioned the particular instrument he was using, and a reader thought I might have been Greek. (I'm not) But they were super happy at seeing this in a random SPN fic, lol. But listening to a lot of blues (which isn't born from my own cultural tradition) led me to a bunch of amazing artists and cultural collabs I didn't see coming.
Song in question was Louisiana Red ft Stelios Vamvakris VooDoo Lady

I do wish media showed less of the conservative, gun-loving, death-penalty-loving, independence means never caring for anyone else and forcing your way on top side of Texas and more of the cultural-mixed, Tex-mex, diverse side of Texas that is the part of Texas I've actually come to like.

There is actually a lot of culture mixing and sharing in Texas. It is just that the loudest people and unfortunately the people who have managed to get the power and disenfranchise the rest and keep them from voting are the negative ones.

Yeah, I feel similarly.

Most of us DO wear shoes and have teeth and don't fuck our cousins, and for fuck's sake, don't blame all of us for Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, most of us hate them too.

Yes! More portrayals of progressive/liberal diverse middle Americans in general would be good. There's a hell of a lot more of us than people think, and not just in the big cities, either.

It may not be the same exact thing, think I'd like to see a wider variety of skin tones for characters from my country. Not everybody's the same shade of brown.

ayrt

I'd include it. To that end, I too hope there was more representation of complexions and features in my own country -- we don't all look like the exports American media consumes and dubs ALL of us as. To that end, I would expand the representation across all of Central/South America & the Caribbean.

I guess ethnic foods being mentioned where food isn't the focal point of the scene? (I recently wrote a story that had someone eating rohlíky because it was common where I grew up, and then I had to explain what rohlíky is to my beta reader. 😅)

I am all in favor of this! I love seeing mentions of a culture's food in the context of a fic.

People speaking Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic), proper ceilidhs (while the word itself just means 'meeting' a ceilidh is a dancing event with lots of specific dances, many of which involve dancing with half the other dancers. Strip the Willow is a favourite) and adaptations of scottish folk tales.
The only things I remember offhand having a ceilidh like thing in it, aside from Scottish shows, are The Snowman and the original Card Captor Sakura anime.
And on the other hand I'd like to never, ever, see someone claim that we don't have electricity in crofting communities again. I live in a super isolated place where half the population own more sheep than there are people in the village and we don't even have a POST OFFICE but we have electricity and phones and internet. We've had them all my life. (It's a stereotype I see too much.)
