Lol these books, the first 3 are good but the last 3 are a dumpster fire and Jean Auel had clearly stopped giving a fuck midway thru volume 4. I can't imagine the wank over this as a series, tho, there's so much that would be considered ~problematic~ content in these, like get ALL the popcorn ready, lol!

I can't remember if i read all of them or not. I know I read the first three or four, but...I was getting bored of the 'modern' romance 'issues' and tropes she kept kind of bringing in.

But...heh - i was *totally* there for reading about how to prepare and tan a hide, or cook a huge animal, or make leather dye. Those were such awesome fun. :D

DA - most of the latter half of the series can be boiled down to... prehistoric couple tours prehistoric Europe, domesticating animals and inventing pretty much everything between bouts of enthusiastic, if surprisingly vanilla, sex. Also, sometimes there's a culture clash and sometimes they get high and have prophetic dreams.

Right? I read it first when i was a very young teen, and even then, the sex was really...underwhelming.

INVENTED ALL THE THINGS!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently, foreplay had also just been invented.

*snerk*
And didn't they invent 'missionary' style sex and/or the blowjob?
Something.....

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Ayla invented the bra!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2020-07-11 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Because she had boobs, unlike the poor, boob-free clan women.....

Ayla+Jondalar, the OG Mary Sue/Gary Stu

Because he is SO AMAZINGLY HUGE and her VELVETY FOLDS are the only FOLDS that will actually accommodate him!!

Jayzus, that shite had me rolling my 13-year-old eyes so hard.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Don't forget how it was always capitalized: Pleasures. Jondalar gave her Pleasures, LOL...

*dies*
Omg, yes, the capital P.
And Jondalar (which name always makes me think of a penis. Not like - he's a dick, but a slang word for penis) panting after his de-virginizer 'red foot' woman like some kind of creepy stalker....

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Auel got enough mileage out of the "Jondalar and his Tool" thing to make me wonder if she was 13 when she came up with it.

Oh, man, probably. Which...yay? But please - evolve past that when you write the great Prehistoric novel.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I loved all the little details on herbs and techniques to make weapons, forage for food, etc. They should've published a companion book with all the research.

Or just made it an action/adventure without all the weird sexual drama-llama, angst, and rape.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
YES.

Aw, too bad! Wasn't there a movie or something? I seem to think there was....
But, yeah - it would just be awful in every possible way. I keep thinking of tall, blue-eyed, blonde-haired *white* Ayla being plonked down in probably every actor of color they can find to play the Neanderthals.....

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in 1986,starring Daryl Hannah if you can believe it!

OMG, yes, that's right!!

It was dreadful.

A really much better 'caveman' movie is Quest For Fire.

This is as good a place as any to say that my father, a major Clan of the Cave Bear fan, also loves People of the Raven and related books. Never tried them myself, but might be good for a rec.

I had not heart of the PotR books. Thanks!
