Love those books btw. They're really silly but a cosmic library that holds the balance of reality in its hands and if you're a librarian you get to go on cool adventures stealing rare books? Sign me up. I'll tolerate the dragons and fae!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)I'm looking for something fun and not too dry to listen to while taking walks. I love dragons, stories about books, and I don't care a lot about the coherence of world building (or lack thereof tbh) as long as it is entertaining, but I can't stand sexist het relationships and female characters being made to conform to antiquated gender roles (like if there's the slightest hint of babies ever after, I'm out). Should I give it a try?

Dragons (and probably fae too) are implied to have no issues when it comes to sexuality or sexual partners (so I take it to mean they're 100% not het overall) and the heroine Irene isn't exactly a stereotype of all female action/adventure characters. She does develop feelings for two male characters but it's definitely not the main thrust of the plot, and for one of them (the dragon) it's more how it would effect their working relationship *and* she's concerned about her professionalism and dedication to her life's work as dragons and fae are enemies, the library is neutral. The other character she likes is from a world-reality that is basically Victorian so I can understand why he might not be particularly unconventional romantically.
No babies so far. I haven't read the latest couple of books but the main family related mystery is regarding Irene's parents as she learns something pretty shocking about her origins (related to the fact two librarians having a child together isn't considered normal.)

I recommend them to anyone who considers themselves a book lover who also likes soft sci-fi with a time travel/reality warping element!

I also like that the tension between dragons and fae is more about Order vs Chaos and neither is explicitly laid out as the "Good" or "Evil" side even if there's a dragon character that's close to the heroine.
Anyway, I enjoy the books, would recommend. Irene's cool.
