I don't think it's just queerbait/yaoi bait, but having a show with a large male cast also works as a harem show just without the female lead. You don't want to alienate the female audience who are dreaming about their fav boy in the show and buying the merch.

I'm sorry you went through all that - it sucks when something you like gets associated with horrible people and their wank-wars.

I managed to avoid the worst of shipping wars because I spent most of my time on Deviantart, youtube and AO3/FFnet to get my fandom fixes in Free! Also blocking people who's too into fandom discourse/wank helped a lot too.

But even if its too late for that, I hope you find another fandom that brings you joy and less jerks in the fandom.
