And in the rare cases of there being a bifauxnen, current fandom will immediately declare her a trans guy.

I mean, it makes sense for there to be some overlap

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
They do it to characters who are bothered by being mistaken for guys too, though. And I don't much care about people's headcanons as long as I can avoid them, but the insistence that a character must be canon trans due to their headcanon and anyone disagreeing is transphobic is another matter.

Okay but do you not see how fucking awful and stereotypical it is that EVERY SINGLE WOMAN WHO DARES NO BE WAIFY AND FEMININE WITH FEMININE INTERESTS is declared a trans man? To use the Powerpuff Girls: it's always Buttercup who's a trans man, not Bubbles.

My eyes!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm.

I think, for me, the broader problem is that both of these examples tend to be really fetishistic in a way that makes me deeply uncomfortable (both in the case where I'm not into it personally and in the case where I am). I do think that there's an element of sexism, in the different way that those fetishes play out. But it feels like the overall fetishization is kinda the elephant in the room with that conversation - I'm not sure how much of an improvement it would be to objectify both sides equally. And I am not sure what the answer is, either, because I don't think that there's anything wrong with it, it just feels grody to me. I don't know how to feel about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP. There's definitely a type of person who's crazy about all manners of feminine things but ONLY if it's a boy wearing/performing them. It weirds me out how prevalent this is & can't help but smell a hint of misogyny in there.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-12 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be down for what you're suggesting OP -- does any such media exist? I say this as a sucker for actual bishonen (I love pretty guys, bonus if his voice is deep and he's just smooth and masculine -- not because oh I look so pretty I have to defend myself (probably true but not highlighted as the reason why he kicks so much ass), but just because he is....sigh)and I didn't know what you were suggesting is a trope -- but I like the sound of it!

I think the only "bifauxnen" I've ever ran into was Sailor Uranus from Sailor Moon, when she was modeling and they had her dressed in ambiguous clothes/slacks -- basically little me wasn't sure/couldn't readily identify her as a woman.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
There's some bifauxnen out there, a good example would be Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, more specifically the side character Kashima Yuu (https://semperquondamnumquam.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/nozaki-kun-ep03-prince.png and https://am24.mediaite.com/tms/cnt/uploads/2014/09/Nozaki-kun-featured.jpg are good examples). Yuu wears a skirt a lot of the time but she's one of the VERY few bifauxnen where the creators actually let their bifauxnen look like an actual guy.

If you're asking me specifically if there's femboy x bifauxnen stuff out there...not really. :( There's the short manga "Yugamira" but the "bifauznen" is still super girly and it's played off as a "femboy and bifauxnen are dating but neither knows the true gender of the other" thing, which just kind of squicks me out to be totally honest!

Overall it's really, really hard to find true bifauxnen in the first place and femboyxbifauxnen is nonexistent.

There's one cute bifauxnen as a secondary character in the Naono Bohra BL manga Three Wolves mountain. She falls in love with a character with a wolf head lol. It's actually super cute though. The main BL couple is cute as well and there's even a switching scene in there where the uke (a werewolf) sort of...goes into heat, and he asks to top the seme, and surprisingly for once in a manga they actually go there.

Re: OP

Naono Bohra often subverts tropes like that. Her big thing is older ukes, younger semes, which is kinda rare in BL.

Just here to say that Valshe is amazing and I... proabably need to catch up on her music.

Also yeah we do need more bifauxen. I only could think of Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club as being one that didn't fit what you said.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Valshe is amazing! :) Both musically and of course have you seen her bifauxnen cosplays? Yes plllleeeeaazze.

I wish I were into the style of Ouran High School Host Club, I just can't get into that lanky twig with big eyes look though. It's a shame because I think I'm missing out, from what people tell me Haruhi is handled pretty well as a bifauxnen character. I also have a soft spot for when all the girls at a school or on a sports team or something all have major crushes and fawn all over their """prince""" lol.

Sorry, I just think it's hilarious that your idea of non-heteronormative genderfuckery is... a guy topping a girl.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
If you spend any time in actual femboy fandoms, a femboy topping a woman of any persuasion is non-heteronormative genderfuckery. A woman slapping on a strap-on and fucking a femboy silly with it just plays into like 99.99999% of the shit already out there. God forbid a femboy not want something up his asshole.

And a femboy fucking a masculine woman? That is absolutely being non-heteronormative. Heteronormativity isn't just about who fucking who or what parts are penetrating what other parts, it's about the people involved and how they present.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, that's not really non-heteronormative, that's just a trend in those fandoms/that subculture. A feminine guy/masculine girl pairing by itself might break het norms due to their gender presentations, but I don't think within that pairing the girl using a strap-on on the guy is more heteronormative than the guy fucking the girl.

I'd be more into bifauxnen if I were into boobs, but I'm not. :\

OP

In my experience usually it's the vagina people get all squirmy and weird about. In queer spaces AND in fandom spaces it feels like there is some major bias towards penis. I see a lot of frankly weird and bordering on misogynistic comments about how vaginas are "gross" or "boring".

This is the first time I've seen someone mention breasts as a reason for not being super into them lol. Honestly I'm not super into big breasts for bifauxnen characters, partly because speaking as a post-top trans guy who had LARGE breasts, I know how unrealistic it is to expect a person to perfectly hide double D breasts. There were some days despite an hour of fiddling I looked like I was smuggling a pillow under my shirt. :/ The other reason I enjoy smaller breasts on them is...I just feel like that also adds to the androgyny aspect I enjoy. :)

Yessssss, bifauxnen/femboy pairs would be so good! Like, I'm trans, I want trans representation, but ALSO, there are SEVERAL reasons past egg me was super into genderfuckery, and denial was only ONE of them!

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trans as well lol! Trans guy to be specific. I definitely love trans rep (especially trans male (or trans made coded)rep, we get so fucking little), but I also love cis GNC people too, and there is something super hot a about a masculine lady ready to sweep you off your feet. :'D

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I love bifauxnen. I love them so much.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-13 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm bi. I like feminine looks on both men and women. Women who look feminine are gorgeous. Men who look feminine are gorgeous. Men who look masculine are all right sometimes as long as they're not TOO manly. Women who look masculine do nothing for me ever because the bar for "too manly" is much lower when the person isn't even a man. Sorry my vagina is a misogynist.

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-07-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Your vagina might not be a misogynist, but your petty defensiveness over this certainly is putting up some red flags. Frankly, I don't care what personally flicks your bean. Watch whatever you want. You're one person, and your personal turn-ons and offs doesn't mean that there isn't some heavy misogyny going on in the general trend of femboy/bifauxnen fandom, and it often spills over into real life too.
