Well, KH was a rather shallow game. Darkness had to equal evil or else what were you going to fight, exactly?
Again, I liked the first KH. I thought it was cutesy, I agree with most of your praise.

That's true. I probably could've worded that better (as in, I didn't like that the game had no shades of gray until the later games, both of which were disappointing in one way or another).

It was! And as someone said before in an attempt to be insulting, yeah, I played it when I was about 13/14. *shrug* Everyone's gotta be young sometime.

...Except Darkness never actually equalled Evil in KHverse and I really wonder how you got that out of it. Probably, judging by your comments elsewhere, because you weren't willing to give it the credit to use a slightly more complicated metaphor? But Darkness isn't "Evil", and Light isn't "Good". This is why some of the main characters wielded it and continued to use it as their element throughout the game. The problem came if people gave into it, not if they used it at all. Even in the climax of KH2, Riku's still using Darkness. Mickey, who's obv. the PURE LOL MICKEY character, uses Darkness/the Key of Darkness.

If anything, Darkness represents the ID -- hidden things, uncontrolled things, subtlety, lies, uncertainty, etc. Light represents the Superego; overarching Law, Authoritarianism, etc. Both Light and Dark use people -- who usually have an amount of both -- to their own ends. (This is also why Nobodies are viewed as forces of chaos, I figure -- they're not properly a part of the 'natural' spectrum due to not having hearts to be swayed by the ID/Superego dynamic). This is why Princesses of Light etc can have bad habits (Kairi's a delinquent, Ariel's got issues with authority) etc, but don't feel the emotions the ID represents -- hatred, anger, etc. Likewise, "giving in to the darkness" tends to represent giving in to desire etc (see: Riku, Maleficient).

KH wasn't a huge, powerful, overarching work of genius. But it did do a metaphor a damn sight better than "Dark is bad and light is good!!" and played with it especially hard in KH2 by taking the main villains out of that dichotomy, making the main "Light" controller be acting out of revenge desires, and by having the certain previous super-ultra-evil-dark villains ally with Sora without becoming 'good' and actually coming out on top (See: Maleficient acquiring prime real estate in The World that Never Was so she can build up her evil empire near the heartless, and Sora allowing this because she and he both had the goals of getting rid of the Organization).

Don't give it credit it doesn't deserve, but give it the credit it's due.

Ok.

You're sort of way too touchy. I assure you that I was able to recognize a spectrum of good to evil even in the Kingdoms Hearts games, but I still think that the light/dark dichotomy is pretty rudimentary and basically boils down to "Even in the darkness, every colour can be found."

I'll give credit where credit is due, but you're giving entirely too much credit, especially by trying to conflate simple symbolic concepts of light and dark to Freudian concepts in order to lend some credence. Certainly the game touched on a few of the things you mention here and there, but not with any of the sophistication that you seem to think - which is probably why you feel the need to drag Freudian allegories into the whole mess, as though "giving into darkness" isn't a clear enough symbolic statement as it is.

I wasn't being touchy at all. I'm not upset -- the only reason I was talking a lot was to explain my answer. I was, simply, pointing out that you were completely ignoring canon elements to say that it was a weaker symbol than it was, and not using any touchier diction than you were -- since I assumed that was acceptable?

You may disagree with the Freudian allegories, but I'm at least "dragging in canon elements" to support it. You honestly can't say that it's less sophisticated than I think, or that I'm giving it too much credit, without at least doing likewise. I pointed out the associations of darkness with desire/power/losing control to the unconcious, and named some examples of 'good' dark people, and touched (a little more briefly) on the light side as well. You can't just think you have a good counter-argument with "it's not sophisticated!" without... you know, supporting the point. Especially since that's not the point. You see:

I already said I didn't think it was literary genius. One can use Freudian concepts of personal unconscious without doing it in a sophisticated or advanced manner. That's how I feel Kingdom Hearts used it here. It's really obviously not a GOOD OR EVIL!!1 metaphor at play in the game, but it is a dominant metaphor, and it's very Id-Superego. That doesn't mean that it isn't heavy-handed, but it's still there by virtue of being in line with the symbolism. If the dark people aren't all evil, what do they have in common? Etc. I'm not even saying Nomura went LET'S USE FREUD 8D, just that the concepts we see that DO fit that metaphor fall in line with the Freudian theory of the unconscious (subconscious desire vs controlling authority).

Again, I honestly am not touchy, but I'm giving reasons for my theories. The two shouldn't be mistaken. Please at least give me the credit of doing likewise instead of basically just saying "No, you're wrong" without supporting it, okay?

Not that I know much about Freud, but as for the characters, yeah, the majority of the villains gave into darkness for the sake of power, but Riku was simply a mix of ambition and thoughtless naivete in that he was certain the darkness couldn't do the same to him. And although Mickey's is probably the Keyblade of Darkness, the only thing I remember even vaguely hinting at that is that he says 'I've got the one for this side' and that was that for it. It never goes anywhere with that (unfortunately).

I'm sure the elements are there if you really look for them, but as a player who was in the target range when the first one came out, I certainly wasn't looking for them. Kingdom Hearts isn't Xenogears, after all.
