Oh god you're right.
139. See, I can relate. Sort of. I totally don't see Joshua/Neku at all how fandom portrays them, but I find that replaying through the game, I can see how... it would work in my head. Which is nothing like the fandom as a whole seems to think/imagine/see things, which might be my major problem there. :|b So I can totally ship it if I use my own headcanon and ignore most of fandom.
That said, I totally ship quite a few other pairings more. Such as Eri/Shiki, or Uzuki/Shiki/Eri, or Kariya/Beat. ... uh but then again I'm not normal, obviously! XD

I don't know why I started with a TL;DR about Joshua. ;; Mostly, I just see Joshua not wanting to leave alone someone who's as interesting as Neku is. Joshua has no idea how to have friends or relationships, and I wouldn't say that he's especially interested in having either, though I can easily see him approaching a sexual attraction with more ease while not having the slightest clue how to practically apply emotions to it. :| By the end of canon, though, he obviously does regret something, maybe just being seperated from Neku (who is probably the closest thing to a "friend" he has, besides Hanekoma, who I think would be on a different level than a simple friend/family/whatever bond) or from seeing what Neku has and how much he's changed because of it.
For the most part, when it comes to Joshua's part of the pairing, I see him being a lot more complex than people make him out to be -- or that people just tend to paint him in extremes. He's not a rapist with "oh woe deep down I like you~" qualities, and he's not really going to approach it with an attitude anywhere NEAR "you are precious to me" -- even if it were true, I don't think he'd ever be able to say it. ... I think when it comes down to it, I see Joshua as having emotions, just being even more severely emotionally retarded than Neku was at the beginning of the game.
For Neku's part... I don't wanna get into the kind of length with him as I did with Jesus Kiryuu :||||| but suffice to say that... I see him in fic as being either too much like he is at the very beginnings of the game, or being too much like a Stereotypical Doujinshi Uke. By the end of the game, he obviously has mixed feelings about Joshua. The whole "I don't forgive you yet, but I trust you" thing. He has a real desire to connect with Joshua as a friend, now, though I'm sure he also wants to get in a good yell-rant before letting go of the shit he did. :I So I doubt he'd go the "OH GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, GO AWAY YOU ONLY CAUSE TROUBLE" route while Joshua giggles and flirts and molests him, but I also don't see him pulling the omgwhatisthisfeeling~~~ thing either.

/MY WAY-TOO-MANY CENTS, SERIOUSLY. I'm so sorry for talking your ear off. D: Or... eyes, as the case may be! Hopefully that made even a tiny bit of sense. I tend to overthink things and have weird thoughts in the first place, sooooo.
RE: THREESOME! Haha, mostly that stemmed from me reading one of the fics on the TWEWY comm because it wasn't purely Joshua/Neku (I think it also had Konishi/Minamimoto) -- the AU one where "Players" were auctioned off to be owned by those higher up in society? I wasn't sure what they were doing with the Joshua/Neku parts, but I gotta admit that from what I remember, it was beautifully written. Anyway, there was a bit of Uzuki+Eri+Shiki in there that was definitely... I wouldn't say romantic but it wasn't outright sexual? Kinda messed-up flirty. And it caught my interest.
And yes, Eri/Shiki = ♥♥♥ Heck, Neku/Shiki/Eri too. c: I am so easy and ship a lot in most of my fandoms.

Yes, it's definitely a more complicated, nuanced relationship than most fanficcers are really capable of getting into. In large part, I think, because, as you said, Joshua is so insanely difficult to parse on his own, let alone as part of a pairing. I felt like I was just starting to understand him at the end of his week... and then the BIG TWEEST, and I'm thrown for a loop again. At first I was extremely miffed because I thought I'd have to throw out everything I thought I understood... and then I replayed it and read a few fanfics, and realized that my initial read of him might work as what he was like before he died and became the Composer, and for the purposes of trying to blend in he was doing a reprise of it.
And I definitely want a link to that slave fic. Which is not a sentence I ever thought I would see myself type, but there you go.

At least, not with Neku... Angel!Josh and Hanekoma on the other hand, I can see. I would probably even enjoy their interactions because Hanekoma does not take Joshua's shit. See, NEKU should not take Joshua's shit and vague song-and-dance after all that's happened. To see Neku portrayed as someone who cannot stand up to or question Joshua, someone who does NOT have beliefs and ideals of his own that he would stick too and stand for despite Joshua's probing, questioning and analysis, THAT burns my ass. And a Neku that honestly tells Joshua where and how far in he can shove his BS is... a Neku that I honestly do not think would have romantic feelings for Joshua. I think there would be a barrier between those two, a feeling that "We are too strong individually to ever truly get along" and that would just be such a huge, emotional sink that I don't think love could develop in.
ALSO I will readily confess: I am a dude, hetero, capable and willing of seeing/analyzing/pulling hetero relationships out of my ass and a seldom as capable and willing to do the same for gay pairings. But even so I can honestly say I would in fact read well-written IC Beat/Neku over wellwritten IC Shiki/Neku because Beat is hilarious. Any fic where he's in would have to rely on stuff BESIDES mushy purple prose and overtly romantic stuff, and that would make it more interesting for me to read. Shiki... well, I love her and everything, but girl got issues. Seeing fic where she and Neku help each other become stronger and deal with their issues would be sweet, no doubt about it, but the risk for a little too much angst spoiling the broth would make me wary.
TL:DR I like pairings that make the people in it happy.Also two questions: who's Eri now and, after seeing the other comment you made: Beat/Rhyme? Really?... How does that work?
